Press TV, Iran: Chinese military exercises seen as warning to USA against attacking Iran

In recent weeks, the ‘Judging Freedom’ program has asked me and other interviewees how the Russians might react to a possible US-Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. My own response was that direct Russian intervention to defend Iran is not foreseen by their recently concluded comprehensive cooperation agreement and, in fact, Russia is too deeply engaged in its war with Ukraine to get involved militarily elsewhere. However, I pointed to China as having greater reason to intervene on behalf of Iran, given that it receives a large percentage of its oil imports from that country and would risk still greater threat to its oil supplies from any closing of the Straits of Hormuz which Iran would likely carry out if under attack.

In this chat with Press TV yesterday, I developed this idea of Chinese responding to threats against Teheran presently emanating from Washington. Indeed, I am calling the just started Chinese military exercises around Taiwan as a clear signal to Washington to desist with its planning an attack on Iran lest China create a ‘second front’ by laying siege to Taiwan.

In this context, it is also conceivable that Russia would create a ‘third front’ against Washington by responding to any US attack on Iran as cause for some major escalation in its war on Ukraine.

In the past two days, the Chinese Foreign Minister has been visiting Moscow and met not only with his Russian counterpart Lavrov but also with President Putin. What is said about their talks publicly is that they deal with preparations for Chairman Xi’s visit to Moscow for the 9 May celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe day. Surely they also have discussed joint action to prevent and/or to respond to a US attack on Iran.
