Gilbert Doctorow's latest book, "War Diaries. The Russia-Ukraine War, 2022-2023" is a unique contribution to literature on the war thanks to the author's reports on the Russian home front written during his periodic visits to St Petersburg at a time when Russia no longer issued visas and nearly all Western journalists had left the country. Doctorow's two-volume "Memoirs of a Russianist" published in 2020 also constitutes a category of its own, consisting largely of diary entries rather than reminiscences written decades later.. Volume 2 focuses on the community of 50,000 expatriate managers working and living in Moscow during the 1990s, about which none of his peers has yet to write. Gilbert Doctorow is a professional Russia watcher and actor in Russian affairs going back to 1965. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College (1967), a past Fulbright scholar, and holder of a Ph.D. with honors in history from Columbia University (1975). After completing his studies, Mr. Doctorow pursued a business career focused on the USSR and Eastern Europe. For twenty-five years he worked for US and European multinationals in marketing and general management with regional responsibility. From 1998-2002, Doctorow served as the Chairman of the Russian Booker Literary Prize in Moscow. Can’t say I agree with this. Ukraine had been out of money since long before 2022. Everything is kept afloat by westerner money and the strain on the country was much reduced by the exodus of millions at the start of the war.
Countries who should have no interest or stakes in the war as Italy and Ireland are fanatical supporters of the Kiev regime.
It’s abundantly obvious that the western “educated” middle-class sections of society are utterly lazy and stupid on matters of geopolitics and war. Western governments may shuffle around but they can get away with pretty much anything regarding Ukraine.
The western military-industrial complex, employing millions, and the American oil and gas companies have it in their interest to carry on.
So I see 30 billion euros as a drop in the ocean for westerners. If money was an object, then support for Ukraine would have ceased long ago.
In fairness to Putin,the mass production and usage of jet-powered drones Russia has done is only recent, so the cynical but plausible opinion these increased scale of attacks on Kiev and Ukraine as a whole away from the frontline are more to do with curating public opinion before the Duma elections- should in my opinion be put on hold.

Actually many Italians sympathize with Russia and those who oppose sending weapons and money to Kiev are almost as many as those in favor. But the government has to align with EU official position, while not being as russophobe as in the Baltics, Britain, Poland and Scandinavia.

Are you sure that Russia is closing all the routes by which western military hardware reaches Ukraine? Because I hear that right now Ukrainians are on the offensive in the direction of Lyman and I doubt that this would happen if they were short on equipment. And this is happening after the Russians had a few weeks when they could hit almost anything they wanted, because Ukraine lacked air defenses. You will excuse my doubts, but I’ve been hearing pro-russian military experts say that Ukraine is about to collapse since April. And I mean April 2022. A certain amount of skepticism is in order.
