This evening news came that Victor Orban has blocked the EU appropriation of 18 billion euros in financial assistance to the Kiev regime for 2023. This one man stood up against the 26 conformists and cowards who head the other EU Member States. Orban took this remarkable step, knowing the price to be paid for his insubordination, namely Brussels’ putting a block on Hungary’s 5.8bn euro worth of Covid-19 recovery funds. Nonetheless, he pursued the logic of his months-long attacks on EU policy with respect to the Ukraine crisis as being utterly mad, leading Europe to economic suicide through its Russia sanctions.
One man against 26: what does that tell an unbiased observer? It suggests unbelievable courage of one’s convictions. And what does The Financial Times, my marker for Western mainstream media, have to say about this display of courage? It offers its readers the following:
Russia expert András Rácz, of the German Council on Foreign Relations think-tank, described the veto as a “low point in Hungarian foreign policy”.
“Low point”? On the contrary, I rate this as the high point of Hungarian foreign policy, which is built upon the interests of the Hungarian nation, not on servitude to the United States and preservation of American global hegemony at the expense of all the rest.
Orban’s principled action has to be placed alongside that of Turkish president Erdogan, who also has called out the rank stupidity of European policy with respect to the Ukraine conflict, who has gone directly against the United States on questions of military procurement, and who is holding up NATO accession of Sweden and Finland to get satisfaction of his own demands relating to the political stability and security of his country. The comforting message in all this is that the world has not gone entirely mad and reason may yet prevail against vile propaganda and the ‘go along, get along’ thinking.
If I have to find some equivalent to Victor Orban’s brave stand in modern American political history, it would be the extraordinary stand of Senator from West Virginia Robert Byrd in eloquently opposing George Bush the Younger on the coming U.S. invasion of Iraq in late 2002, early 2003. This is the pursuit of Veritas that gives me hope. If only my alma mater would take note!

Postscript, 14 December 2022: Orban backs down, 18 billion euro EU package of aid to Ukraine passes
From the moment I published my article praising Viktor Orban for his principled veto against the aid package, there were several comments posted or sent directly to me via the Contact function questioning the genuineness of the Hungarian position. These writers said that it was just a cynical ploy to wrest concessions from the European Commission. I did not respond, because I knew full well that the blackmail to which Hungary was being exposed by Brussels was so great that Orban would likely submit. And yet the realism that underlay yesterday’s reversal by Budapest on the aid package to Ukraine was precisely as principled as the realism of Orban’s opposing Europe’s suicidal policies with respect to sanctions and to further aid to Kiev that prolongs the war: the Hungarian leader was doing what heads of government are elected to do, namely defending the interests of his nation. None of this detracts from my remark that the man has shown incredible bravery by publicly standing up against the blind conformism that reins in the EU Institutions. If only there were more such leaders with guts and brains…

Doesn’t Hungary still have a functioning sovereign currency? Is so then unlike Greece, Hungary can not have its economy crushed by denial of currency transactions. If the EU is to enslave Hungary, it will have find another route. No doubt the EU will try to crush Hungary somehow as well as change their rules to fund Ukraine.

Remarkable how Hungary has become an oasis of (uncommon) common sense. And I also agree with your praise of Senator Byrd. I do remember vividly his eloquent speech against Bush’s mad rush to attack Iraq. How right was Senator Byrd! How profoundly evil was Bush’s decision to massacre Iraq!

So true what you say. Iraq was in many ways the beginning of the end of USA. Every stupid war and regime change after it came quicker and blatantly dumber and easier to see the lies to justify them. I was then a Reagan Republican. I was totally bored over the entire media obsession over the build up to the invasion and Iraq nonsense, casually believing it wouldn’t happen because I wasn’t paying attention to news because I didn’t care for Bush and the whole idea of invading Iraq was so ridiculous. Then I decided to pay attention. I learned the WMD thing was total fraud. Shortly afterwards I learned this, the invasion was launched. Fast forward and I became a Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein voter after first becoming a Democrat then learning they are the same as Republicans. Guess all we have are a handful of people of reason like Orban, Doctorow, Putin, Yevs Smith, etc.

A display of courage? Rather one of extreme Machiavellianism. In the interests of the Hungarian nation? Most unlikely. In the pursuit of Veritas? Unequivocally not! Rather I suspect this has more to do with domestic point scoring, as thumbing one’s nose at the West goes down well in a country which still viscerally remembers the humiliation of Trianon. That and some undeclared quid pro quo over energy supplies. It is a game Orban plays well, but last only so long. In the end he always throws in his hand with the rest.

I have directed attention to what Orban did. Regardless of motivation, surely you will agree that standing up all by oneself to 26 colleagues, is an act of exceptonal bravery. Now as for motivation: speculating on that is a fool’s errabd, a distraction from the simple facts of what the man has said for months and now had done. Will Orban fold eventually? No one can say. The loss of 5 billion in EU money to which his country is otherwise entitled may be superior force. Nonetheless, I remind you that among the other 26 leaders there also are at least several who have locked horns with the Commission, including the Prime Minister of Belgium., who secured a relief for his country with respect to the diamond and steel industries on the last round of sanctions. This time none but Orban has come forward with a veto. No one else has tried what you choose to call a cynical ploy to secure the interests of his country against the disastrous sanctions policy when push comes to shove and the open vote takes place.

Orban has not opposed providing aid to Ukraine, only aid based on debt financing.
See, e.g., three tweets by Orban, starting with this one:
“1/3 Today’s news was all about Hungary vetoing financial assistance to #Ukraine. This is fake news. Hungary is ready to give financial assistance to Ukraine, on a bilateral basis. No #veto, no blackmailing.”

How dare Orban oppose the wishes of the United States! Does he think he represents a sovereign country? A coup is in order.
