The upcoming ‘peace conference’ in Jeddah: discussion on Press TV (Iran)

Once again I am appreciative of the news team at Press TV for an invitation to discuss the forthcoming peace conference in Jeddah on 5-6 August.

There has been very little mention of this conference in major media so far and there seems to be confusion at the Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeerah and other channels as to what the gathering can accomplish. It is not yet clear what kind of representation is to be expected from the more than 30 countries that have been invited.

What does seem clear is that the United States is the basic promoter of this gathering at which Jake Sullivan hopes to make a case for the Ukrainian peace plan to the Global South attendees.  The only problem with this is that the Ukrainian plan is essentially a Russian capitulation: acceptance of full withdrawal from Ukrainian territory back to the 1991 boundaries, the placing of the Russian leadership before a court for its war crimes, the payment of reparations to Ukraine and the like.   This is all the height of absurdity given the presently obvious fact that Kiev’s much heralded counter-offensive has been a failure and the country’s total defeat could come in the very near future.

  1. I see the Mexicans have decided the whole ‘conference’ is a waste of time while others in the so-called Global South take a different view because (I believe) they see it as an opportunity to give the Ukies a good dressing down. The US of course see it in terms of trying to persuade the Global South to move to their anti-Ukie position, which will not happen (and the Russians know this which is why they have not expressed any concern with this event). It will achieve nothing (as with the earlier Danish event) and consequently, I doubt we will hear much about it in the press.

  2. Let’s see. Saudi Crown Prince MbS has been thoroughly disrespected by Biden, and undoubtedly remembers it. Saudi Arabia cooperates closely with Russia on oil production matters, and has strong self-interest reasons for not rocking that boat. Saudi is also trying to join the BRICS alliance, which includes Russia but not Zelensky.

More likely, terrence (above) is correct. Instead of Zelensky getting an opportunity to swing those 30 countries to his side, he will more likely get an earful from people telling him he is an idiot who is putting everyone else at risk of WWIII, and it is time for him to negotiate seriously with Russia. If this peace conference pricks Zelensky’s bubble, it just might have a beneficial effect.

  3. Two things:
Thank you for supplying another resource for the world going’s on.
Also the point at which this war comes to a conclusion is hopefully sooner, not later. Then, young men can stop being blown to bits. It’s nearly criminal that the west has fueled this. More and more are dying when in March ‘22 it all might have been avoided. Shameful.
