Live broadcast on the rumored hospitalization in Moscow of Belarus President Lukashenko

It was a pleasure to participate in this morning’s Newspoint discussion program on WION, in which my fellow ‘panelist’ was Dr. Malcolm Davis, Senior Analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Canberra. Our task was to evaluate claims by a Belarus opposition leader that President Alexander Lukashenko is now in a critical condition in a Moscow hospital following a closed-door meeting with Vladimir Putin. It was further alleged by the Opposition that Lukashenko had possibly been poisoned by the Russians. The whole story is not yet in your morning’s New York Times, but in the U.K. it has been carried by The Mirror and The Daily Mail.

For those unfamiliar with this television channel, I note that they have 7.49 million subscribers. The show’s presenter was clearly on top of the situation and alert to openings in our remarks allowing him to dig deeper into questions and maintain a lively and relevant discussion of what to Indians is surely a rather exotic geopolitical news item.

J’ai eu le plaisir de participer ce matin à l’émission de discussion Newspoint sur WION, dans laquelle mon collègue « panéliste » était le Dr Malcolm Davis, analyste principal à l’Australian Strategic Policy Institute, à Canberra. Notre tâche consistait à évaluer les affirmations d’un dirigeant de l’opposition biélorusse selon lesquelles le président Alexandre Loukachenko se trouve actuellement dans un état critique dans un hôpital de Moscou à la suite d’une réunion à huis clos avec Vladimir Poutine. L’opposition a également affirmé que M. Loukachenko avait peut-être été empoisonné par les Russes. Le présentateur de l’émission était clairement au fait de la situation et attentif aux brèches dans nos remarques, ce qui lui a permis d’approfondir les questions et de maintenir une discussion animée et pertinente sur ce qui, pour les Indiens, est sans doute une actualité géopolitique plutôt exotique.

Live-Sendung über den mutmaßlichen Krankenhausaufenthalt des weißrussischen Präsidenten Lukaschenko in Moskau

Es war mir ein Vergnügen, heute Morgen an der Newspoint-Diskussionssendung auf WION teilzunehmen, an der auch Dr. Malcolm Davis, Senior Analyst am Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Canberra, teilnahm. Unsere Aufgabe bestand darin, die Behauptungen eines weißrussischen Oppositionsführers zu bewerten, wonach sich Präsident Alexander Lukaschenko nach einem Treffen mit Wladimir Putin hinter verschlossenen Türen in einem Moskauer Krankenhaus in einem kritischen Zustand befindet. Die Opposition behauptete ferner, dass Lukaschenko möglicherweise von den Russen vergiftet worden sei. Die ganze Geschichte steht noch nicht in der New York Times von heute Morgen, aber im Vereinigten Königreich wurde sie von The Mirror und The Daily Mail übernommen.

Transmisión en vivo sobre la rumoreada hospitalización en Moscú del presidente bielorruso Lukashenko

Fue un placer participar en el programa de discusión Newspoint de esta mañana en WION, en el que mi compañero “panelista” fue el Dr. Malcolm Davis, analista senior del Instituto Australiano de Política Estratégica, Canberra. Nuestra tarea consistió en evaluar las afirmaciones de un líder de la oposición bielorrusa de que el presidente Alexander Lukashenko se encuentra ahora en estado crítico en un hospital de Moscú después de una reunión a puerta cerrada con Vladimir Putin. Gilbert Doctorow's latest book, "War Diaries. The Russia-Ukraine War, 2022-2023" is a unique contribution to literature on the war thanks to the author's reports on the Russian home front written during his periodic visits to St Petersburg at a time when Russia no longer issued visas and nearly all Western journalists had left the country. Doctorow's two-volume "Memoirs of a Russianist" published in 2020 also constitutes a category of its own, consisting largely of diary entries rather than reminiscences written decades later.. Volume 2 focuses on the community of 50,000 expatriate managers working and living in Moscow during the 1990s, about which none of his peers has yet to write. Gilbert Doctorow is a professional Russia watcher and actor in Russian affairs going back to 1965. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College (1967), a past Fulbright scholar, and holder of a Ph.D. with honors in history from Columbia University (1975). After completing his studies, Mr. Doctorow pursued a business career focused on the USSR and Eastern Europe. For twenty-five years he worked for US and European multinationals in marketing and general management with regional responsibility. From 1998-2002, Doctorow served as the Chairman of the Russian Booker Literary Prize in Moscow. During the 2010-2011 academic year, he was a Visiting scholar of the Harriman Institute, Columbia University. Mr. Doctorow is a long-time resident of Brussels.

  2. I am sorry – I have a question. How can a person, in a position of Malcolm Davis, Senior Analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, claim that Ukraine will win. Seriously? How this kind of blindness to a situation in Ukraine is possible?

    1. You are making a little joke, I suspect. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute is “independent” but is funded by the Australian Department of Defence along with overseas governments, and defence and technology companies. What overseas governments and technology companies might they be? It would be a very brave career move for any employee to suggest Ukraine might lose.

  3. I think you might have considered just passing on this TV appearance – you only help lend credence to a ridiculous and completely fact-free claim by some dope in the Belarus opposition.

  4. Mr. Fay, It is not so simple as you suggest. In the outrageous claims of the Opposition figure we see the ground being laid for a possible Polish incursion in Belarus to assist a “popular rebellion” against Lukashenko, dead or alive.

    1. I wouldn’t put it past the West to try to destabilize Belarus, especially if Lukashenko passes and a power vacuum emerges. If Poland did step in, it would be a huge escalation in the war. Given that the West is starting to see the writing on the proverbial wall, they may be desperate enough to back something like that.
