Trump and Biden: which liar will you vote for?

Over the past several months, the public and media have directed a lot of attention to the advanced age of the two leading candidates for the U.S. presidency this November. In the case of Trump, he has only an abstraction, the calendar, working against him. Otherwise, looking at him, listening to him, he seems to be in fighting trim. Of course, his well-tailored suits do help.  

In Biden’s case, his stumbling on staircases, his disorientation coming to and leaving the dais at public functions and his overall mental frailty lead many, including registered Democrats, to ask if it is wise for him to stand for re-election. Wouldn’t it be better if he showed the wisdom of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall who explained his resignation from the court in June 1991 very simply and honestly: “I’m getting old and falling apart.” Marshall’s infirmities were physical, not mental and in his farewell press conference he was sharp as a tack. In answer to a reporter’s question how he felt, Marshall shot back “With my hands…”

In yesterday’s delivery of the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress, Biden demonstrated that he still has some fire left in him, so we may give him a pass for now. What was striking was not how he spoke but what he said:  he reminded us all that we have an outrageous liar as president whose appeal is pitched to the intellectually and morally lazy among the electorate and who, through his prevarication, is taking us all to the brink of a devastating world war.

I direct attention to what he said at the start and finish of his address about the two foreign policy issues of the day: Israel’s continuing acts of genocide in Gaza and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Biden argues that he and his administration are doing their utmost to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza. That is a bare-faced lie.  A solution to the crisis is readily available: for the United States to stop supplying arms to the Israeli army. De facto, the atrocities would wind down and stop; de facto the Israeli army would begin its withdrawal.  Biden and Co. are the enablers of this genocide and to speak of their role in peace talks in Cairo or elsewhere is a distraction and a falsehood.

The situation is no better with respect to Biden’s remark that we must support Kiev for the purpose of stopping Putin’s armies in their tracks, since victory in Ukraine will be followed by a Russian advance into NATO countries and an all-out war.  This Big Lie has no substance behind it whatsoever and is merely an aggravated continuation of the Russia-bashing that the Democratic Party has used as a substitute for foreign policy since 2014. The mendacious story of evil Putin was given wings in the 2016 presidential campaign when Hilary Clinton launched the Russia-gate allegations.

Turning to the Republican candidate-to-be, Donald Trump, he was dogged during his entire presidency by daily tallies in mainstream U.S. newspapers of how much misinformation and outright lies he had said publicly the day before. I draw attention to the point that he has been repeating lately and surely will be using up to election day: namely that there would never have been a Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022 if he had been president, because Vladimir Putin respected him, Trump, whereas he was contemptuous of Biden. Of course, this campaign message ignores the fact that a Trump administration would have been no better prepared to deal with Russia’s demands in December 2021 for redesigning the European security architecture than was Biden’s.

I do not think there are many state leaders anywhere, including among the vassal countries that count as American allies, who respected the United States and its president over the past twenty-five years, except perhaps during the first term of Barack Obama, who was deemed, mistakenly, to be the man of peace. In this regard, the Russians align with most other countries. The relationship to the USA is not one of respect but of fear.

We hear this fear expressed by hosts and panelists on the Russian talk shows, which stand for the chattering classes.  Russians accept without question that America is a mighty military force, economic force, political force in the world. What they fear is the irrationality they see in American elites, their loss of pragmatism and the crowning of ideology as the guiding forces in Washington’s Deep State.

After these negative observations about the likely candidates on the ballot for U.S. president in November, some may think I have a dim view of American democracy, but they would be deeply mistaken. Like in the Wendy’s hamburger advertisements, in the USA you will have a choice on election day. The country is split in sentiment between Democrats and Republicans roughly 50:50 and it is this division that gives us all freedom of speech today, not a scrap of paper called the Constitution and its Bill of Rights.

Putting aside domestic policy issues, the two candidates for the presidency are promoting two very different revisionist views of America’s place in the world. I say revisionist because the Democrats’ concept of their country as global hegemon dates back only to 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed, leaving the United States as sole superpower.  Before that the United States claimed to lead the Free World, not the whole world. Meanwhile, the Trump Republicans are keen to implement a different revisionist  scenario in which the country is freed from its parasitic ‘allies’ and can arm itself to the teeth with new strategic weapons systems.

Like so many others who voted for Trump in 2016, I was deeply disappointed by his inability to turn around the ship of U.S. foreign policy in all the different domains he had led us to expect, beginning with restoring normal relations with Russia. His personnel choices in foreign affairs were awful, starting with his first Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and ending with Mike Pompeo. In between there were John Bolton as National Security Advisor and Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations. Terrible people, all of them, who worked against the policies that Trump declared upon taking office.

Why would a new Trump presidency be any better in foreign relations?  The single and decisive reason that I adduce is that Trump has taken aim at NATO and for him to achieve his unstated but clear goal of dismantling NATO all that he has to do is nothing, that is to say not provide support, which is far easier to do than something.

Allowing NATO to sink into oblivion by itself would be the greatest contribution to world peace that one can imagine. It would take all the wind out of the sails of our hyper-aggressive heads of the European Commission, European Council and European Parliament.

But what about China, you may ask.  Wouldn’t Trump lead us into a war in the Pacific?

The defense cooperation between Russia, Iran, North Korea and China, growing by the day thanks to the intensifying intervention of the USA in the territorial disputes in Southeast Asia would present a brick wall against which even the hottest heads in Washington will not go when the moment of truth arrives. Right now I see just glowing embers of a potential conflagration there, whereas the European battlefields are fully aflame in Ukraine.

For all of the above reasons, come election day, I will hold my nose and vote for Trump.

If, despite all of its flaws in personalities at the top and in procedures, meaning ‘the swamp’ in the District of Columbia, the United States has the semblance of a representative democracy, the same cannot be said about Europe, both at the EU level institutions here in Brussels and at the national levels. At the Union level and at the national level in much of the Continent we have rule by coalition which amounts to institutionalized corruption. We, the people, are an irrelevancy when a coalition of parties deals out the ministerial portfolios as favors, without relation to policy or to individual competence.

In the first week of June, here in Europe we have parliamentary elections which are a cause for despair, not celebration.  By law, Belgians are required to vote or face fines and so I also will trudge to my voting booth in one or another nearby school and cast a ballot.  But for whom?  As I learned in the last elections, on the one issue that really interests me, foreign policy, all but one of the parties here are  spouting the same undying support for Kiev and hatred for Russia. And that one party singing arias from another opera is the Communists.

Cast a blank ballot, you say.  But here in Belgium blank ballots have till now been deprived of their sting. The given vote is systematically divided up proportionally among the official parties in accordance with their overall tallies.  To be sure, this year there is a movement called ‘Blanco’ which hopes to overturn that tradition and require blank votes to be counted as ‘against all of the above.’  We will see how far that initiative goes.

And so, notwithstanding my pro-business, culturally traditionalist turn of mind, very likely I will be casting a vote for the Belgian Communists this June.

Negli ultimi mesi, l’opinione pubblica e i media hanno prestato molta attenzione all’età avanzata dei due principali candidati alla presidenza degli Stati Uniti per il prossimo novembre. Nel caso di Trump, solo un ostacolo, il calendario, lavora contro di lui. Per il resto, a guardarlo e ad ascoltarlo, sembra in forma smagliante. Certo, i suoi abiti su misura aiutano.  

Nel caso di Biden, il suo inciampare sulle scale, il suo disorientamento nel salire e scendere dalla tribuna durante le funzioni pubbliche e la sua generale fragilità mentale inducono molti, compresi i democratici registrati, a chiedersi se sia saggio che si candidi per la rielezione. Non sarebbe meglio se mostrasse la saggezza del giudice della Corte Suprema Thurgood Marshall, che spiegò le sue dimissioni dalla Corte nel giugno 1991 in modo molto semplice e onesto: “Sto diventando vecchio e sto cadendo a pezzi”. Vorrei richiamare l’attenzione su ciò che ha detto all’inizio e alla fine del suo discorso sulle due questioni di politica estera del giorno: i continui atti di genocidio di Israele a Gaza e la guerra tra Russia e Ucraina.

Biden sostiene che lui e la sua amministrazione stanno facendo il possibile per ottenere un cessate il fuoco a Gaza. È una bugia bella e buona.  Una soluzione alla crisi c’è: gli Stati Uniti devono smettere di fornire armi all’esercito israeliano. Di fatto, le atrocità diminuirebbero e si fermerebbero; di fatto, l’esercito israeliano inizierebbe il suo ritiro.  Biden e Co. sono i promotori di questo genocidio e parlare del loro ruolo nei colloqui di pace al Cairo o altrove è una distrazione e una falsità.

Per quanto riguarda il futuro candidato repubblicano, Donald Trump, è stato perseguitato per tutta la durata della sua presidenza da conteggi giornalieri sui principali quotidiani statunitensi di quante disinformazioni e vere e proprie bugie avesse detto pubblicamente il giorno prima. Richiamo l’attenzione sul punto che ha ripetuto ultimamente e che sicuramente userà fino al giorno delle elezioni: cioè che non ci sarebbe mai stato un attacco russo all’Ucraina nel febbraio 2022 se lui fosse stato presidente, perché Vladimir Putin rispettava lui, Trump, mentre disprezzava Biden. Naturalmente, questo messaggio elettorale ignora il fatto che un’amministrazione Trump non sarebbe stata meglio preparata ad affrontare le richieste della Russia nel dicembre 2021 di ridisegnare l’architettura di sicurezza europea di quanto lo fosse quella di Biden.

Non credo che ci siano molti leader di Stato, anche tra i Paesi vassalli che contano come alleati dell’America, che abbiano rispettato gli Stati Uniti e il loro Presidente negli ultimi venticinque anni, tranne forse durante il primo mandato di Barack Obama, ritenuto, a torto, l’uomo della pace. In questo senso, i russi si allineano alla maggior parte degli altri Paesi. Il rapporto con gli Stati Uniti non è di rispetto, ma di paura.

Questa paura viene espressa dai conduttori e dai relatori dei talk show russi, che rappresentano la classe dei chiacchieroni.  I russi accettano senza alcun dubbio che l’America sia una potente forza militare, economica e politica nel mondo. Ciò che temono è l’irrazionalità che vedono nelle élite americane, la loro perdita di pragmatismo e l’incoronazione dell’ideologia come forze guida dello Stato profondo di Washington.

Dopo queste osservazioni negative sui probabili candidati alla presidenza degli Stati Uniti a novembre, qualcuno potrebbe pensare che io abbia una visione negativa della democrazia americana, ma si sbaglierebbe di grosso. Come nella pubblicità degli hamburger di Wendy’s, negli Stati Uniti il giorno delle elezioni si potrà scegliere. Il Paese è diviso nei sentimenti tra Democratici e Repubblicani all’incirca 50:50 ed è questa divisione che ci dà oggi la libertà di parola, non un pezzo di carta chiamato Costituzione e il suo Bill of Right.

A parte le questioni di politica interna, i due candidati alla presidenza promuovono due visioni revisioniste molto diverse del posto dell’America nel mondo. Dico revisionista perché la concezione che i Democratici hanno del loro Paese come egemone globale risale solo al 1991, quando l’Unione Sovietica è crollata, lasciando gli Stati Uniti come unica superpotenza.  Prima di allora gli Stati Uniti sostenevano di guidare il mondo libero, non il mondo intero. Nel frattempo, i repubblicani di Trump sono desiderosi di attuare un diverso scenario revisionista in cui il Paese si libera dai suoi “alleati” parassitari e può armarsi fino ai denti con nuovi sistemi di armi strategiche.

Come molti altri che hanno votato per Trump nel 2016, sono rimasto profondamente deluso dalla sua incapacità di invertire la rotta della politica estera statunitense in tutti i diversi ambiti che ci aveva fatto credere, a cominciare dal ripristino di normali relazioni con la Russia. Le sue scelte in materia di personale negli affari esteri sono state pessime, a partire dal suo primo Segretario di Stato Rex Tillerson fino a Mike Pompeo. In mezzo ci sono stati John Bolton come consigliere per la sicurezza nazionale e Nikki Haley come ambasciatore alle Nazioni Unite. Tutte persone pessime, che hanno lavorato contro le politiche dichiarate da Trump al momento del suo insediamento.

Lasciare che la NATO affondi nell’oblio da sola sarebbe il più grande contributo alla pace mondiale che si possa immaginare. Toglierebbe tutto il vento dalle vele dei nostri iper-aggressivi capi della Commissione europea, del Consiglio europeo e del Parlamento europeo.

Ma che dire della Cina, vi chiederete.  Trump non ci porterebbe a una guerra nel Pacifico?

La cooperazione in materia di difesa tra Russia, Iran, Corea del Nord e Cina, che cresce di giorno in giorno grazie all’intensificarsi dell’intervento degli Stati Uniti nelle dispute territoriali nel Sud-Est asiatico, rappresenterebbe un muro di mattoni contro il quale nemmeno le teste più calde di Washington andranno a sbattere quando arriverà il momento della verità. Al momento vedo solo i tizzoni ardenti di una potenziale conflagrazione, mentre i campi di battaglia europei sono completamente infuocati in Ucraina.

Per tutti questi motivi, il giorno delle elezioni, mi tapperò il naso e voterò per Trump.

Se gli Stati Uniti, nonostante tutti i loro difetti a livello di personalità ai vertici e di procedure, ovvero la “palude” del District of Columbia, hanno una parvenza di democrazia rappresentativa, lo stesso non si può dire dell’Europa, sia a livello di istituzioni europee qui a Bruxelles che a livello nazionale. A livello dell’Unione e a livello nazionale in gran parte del continente abbiamo un governo di coalizione che equivale a una corruzione istituzionalizzata. Noi, il popolo, siamo irrilevanti quando una coalizione di partiti distribuisce i portafogli ministeriali come favori, senza alcun rapporto con la politica o con le competenze individuali.

La prima settimana di giugno, qui in Europa, si terranno le elezioni parlamentari che sono motivo di disperazione, non di celebrazione.  Per legge, i belgi sono tenuti a votare o rischiano una multa e quindi anch’io mi recherò alla mia cabina elettorale in una o in un’altra scuola vicina ed esprimerò il mio voto.  Ma per chi?  Come ho imparato alle ultime elezioni, sull’unica questione che mi interessa davvero, la politica estera, tutti i partiti, tranne uno, si esprimono con lo stesso imperituro sostegno a Kiev e l’odio per la Russia. E quell’unico partito che canta arie di un’altra opera è quello dei comunisti.

Si dice di votare scheda bianca.  Ma qui in Belgio le schede bianche sono state finora private del loro effetto. Il voto viene sistematicamente suddiviso in modo proporzionale tra i partiti ufficiali, in base al loro punteggio complessivo.  Certo, quest’anno c’è un movimento chiamato “Blanco” che spera di rovesciare questa tradizione e di imporre che i voti bianchi vengano conteggiati come “contro tutti”.  Vedremo fino a che punto arriverà questa iniziativa.

Quindi, nonostante il mio orientamento culturale tradizionalista e favorevole al business, molto probabilmente a giugno voterò per i comunisti belgi.

Trump und Biden: Für welchen Lügner werden Sie stimmen?

In den letzten Monaten haben die Öffentlichkeit und die Medien viel Aufmerksamkeit auf das fortgeschrittene Alter der beiden führenden Kandidaten für die US-Präsidentschaft im November gerichtet. Im Fall von Trump arbeitet nur eine Abstraktion, der Kalender, gegen ihn. Wenn man ihn ansieht oder ihm zuhört, scheint er ansonsten in bester Verfassung zu sein. Natürlich sind seine gut geschnittenen Anzüge hilfreich.

In Bidens Fall führen sein Stolpern auf Treppen, seine Orientierungslosigkeit beim Betreten und Verlassen des Podiums bei öffentlichen Veranstaltungen und seine allgemeine geistige Gebrechlichkeit dazu, dass viele, auch registrierte Demokraten, sich fragen, ob es klug ist, dass er sich zur Wiederwahl stellt. Wäre es nicht besser, wenn er sich an der Weisheit des Richters am Obersten Gerichtshof Thurgood Marshall orientieren würde, der seinen Rücktritt vom Gericht im Juni 1991 sehr einfach und ehrlich erklärte: “Ich werde alt und falle auseinander.” Marshalls Gebrechen waren körperlicher, nicht geistiger Natur, und in seiner Abschieds-Pressekonferenz war er geistesgegenwärtig. Ich lenke die Aufmerksamkeit auf das, was er zu Beginn und am Ende seiner Rede zu den beiden außenpolitischen Themen des Tages sagte: Israels anhaltender Völkermord in Gaza und der Krieg zwischen Russland und der Ukraine.

Biden behauptet, dass er und seine Regierung alles tun, um einen Waffenstillstand in Gaza zu erreichen. Das ist eine unverfrorene Lüge. Die Lösung der Krise liegt auf der Hand: Die Vereinigten Staaten sollten ihre Waffenlieferungen an die israelische Armee einstellen. De facto würden die Gräueltaten nachlassen und aufhören; de facto würde die israelische Armee mit ihrem Rückzug beginnen. Biden und Co. sind die Ermöglicher dieses Völkermords, und von ihrer Rolle bei den Friedensgesprächen in Kairo oder anderswo zu sprechen, ist ein Ablenkungsmanöver und eine Lüge.

Nicht besser sieht es mit Bidens Bemerkung aus, wir müssten Kiew unterstützen, um Putins Armeen zu stoppen, da auf einen Sieg in der Ukraine ein russischer Vorstoß in die NATO-Länder und ein umfassender Krieg folgen würde. Diese große Lüge hat keinerlei Substanz und ist lediglich eine verschärfte Fortsetzung des Russland-Bashings, das die Demokratische Partei seit 2014 als Ersatz für eine Außenpolitik verwendet. Der künftige republikanische Präsidentschaftskandidat Donald Trump wurde während seiner gesamten Präsidentschaft von den großen US-Zeitungen mit täglichen Darstellungen darüber verfolgt, wie viele Fehlinformationen und Lügen er am Vortag öffentlich verbreitet habe. Ich weise auf den Punkt hin, den er in letzter Zeit wiederholt hat und sicherlich bis zum Wahltag wiederholen wird: nämlich, dass es im Februar 2022 nie einen russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine gegeben hätte, wenn er Präsident gewesen wäre, weil Wladimir Putin ihn, Trump, respektiert hätte, während er Biden verachtet hätte. Natürlich ignoriert diese Wahlkampfbotschaft die Tatsache, dass eine Trump-Administration nicht besser darauf vorbereitet gewesen wäre, mit Russlands Forderungen nach einer Neugestaltung der europäischen Sicherheitsarchitektur im Dezember 2021 umzugehen, als es die von Biden war.

Ich glaube nicht, dass es viele Staatsoberhäupter gibt, auch nicht unter den Vasallenländern, die als Verbündete der USA gelten, die die Vereinigten Staaten und ihren Präsidenten in den letzten fünfundzwanzig Jahren respektiert haben, außer vielleicht während der ersten Amtszeit von Barack Obama, der fälschlicherweise als Mann des Friedens angesehen wurde. In dieser Hinsicht stimmen die Russen mit den meisten anderen Ländern überein. Das Verhältnis zu den USA ist nicht von Respekt, sondern von Angst geprägt.

Diese Angst wird von den Moderatoren und Diskussionsteilnehmern in den russischen Talkshows zum Ausdruck gebracht, die für die “chattering classes” (Plauder-Kreise) stehen. Nach diesen negativen Beobachtungen über die wahrscheinlichen Kandidaten auf dem Stimmzettel für die US-Präsidentschaftswahl im November mögen manche denken, ich hätte eine trübe Sicht auf die amerikanische Demokratie, aber sie würden sich gewaltig irren. Wie in der Werbung für die Hamburger von Wendy’s werden Sie in den USA am Wahltag die Wahl haben. Das Land ist in der Stimmung etwa 50:50 zwischen Demokraten und Republikanern gespalten, und es ist diese Spaltung, die uns allen heute Redefreiheit gibt, und nicht ein Stück Papier namens Verfassung und ihre Bill of Rights.

Abgesehen von innenpolitischen Fragen vertreten die beiden Präsidentschaftskandidaten zwei sehr unterschiedliche revisionistische Auffassungen von Amerikas Platz in der Welt. Ich sage revisionistisch, weil die Vorstellung der Demokraten von ihrem Land als globalem Hegemon nur bis 1991 zurückreicht, als die Sowjetunion zusammenbrach und die Vereinigten Staaten als einzige Supermacht zurückließ. Davor beanspruchten die Vereinigten Staaten, die Freie Welt anzuführen, nicht die ganze Welt. In der Zwischenzeit sind die Trump-Republikaner bestrebt, ein anderes revisionistisches Szenario umzusetzen, in dem das Land von seinen parasitären “Verbündeten” befreit wird und sich bis an die Zähne mit neuen strategischen Waffensystemen aufrüsten kann.

Wie so viele andere, die 2016 für Trump gestimmt haben, war ich zutiefst enttäuscht von seiner Unfähigkeit, das Schiff der US-Außenpolitik in all den verschiedenen Bereichen zu wenden, die er uns hatte erwarten lassen, angefangen mit der Wiederherstellung normaler Beziehungen zu Russland. Seine Personalentscheidungen in der Außenpolitik waren furchtbar, angefangen bei seinem ersten Außenminister Rex Tillerson bis hin zu Mike Pompeo. Dazwischen gab es John Bolton als Nationalen Sicherheitsberater und Nikki Haley als Botschafterin bei den Vereinten Nationen. Allesamt furchtbare Leute, die gegen die Politik arbeiteten, die Trump bei seinem Amtsantritt verkündet hatte.

Warum sollte eine neue Trump-Präsidentschaft in den Außenbeziehungen besser sein? Der einzige und entscheidende Grund, den ich anführe, ist, dass Trump die NATO ins Visier genommen hat, und damit er sein unausgesprochenes, aber klares Ziel, die NATO aufzulösen, erreichen kann, muss er nur nichts tun, d.h. keine Unterstützung leisten, was viel einfacher ist als etwas zu tun.

Die NATO von selbst in Vergessenheit geraten zu lassen, wäre der größte Beitrag zum Weltfrieden, den man sich vorstellen kann. Es würde unseren hyper-aggressiven Chefs der Europäischen Kommission, des Europäischen Rates und des Europäischen Parlaments den Wind aus den Segeln nehmen.

Aber was ist mit China, werden Sie sich fragen. Würde Trump uns nicht in einen Krieg im Pazifik führen?

Die Verteidigungszusammenarbeit zwischen Russland, Iran, Nordkorea und China, die dank der zunehmenden Einmischung der USA in die territorialen Streitigkeiten in Südostasien von Tag zu Tag wächst, würde eine Mauer darstellen, gegen die selbst die schärfsten Köpfe in Washington nicht ankommen werden, wenn die Stunde der Wahrheit gekommen ist. Im Moment sehe ich dort nur die Glut eines möglichen Flächenbrandes, während die europäischen Schlachtfelder in der Ukraine voll in Flammen stehen.

Aus all den oben genannten Gründen werde ich mir am Wahltag die Nase zuhalten und für Trump stimmen.

Wenn die Vereinigten Staaten trotz aller Mängel in Bezug auf die Persönlichkeiten an der Spitze und die Verfahren, d.h. den “Sumpf” im District of Columbia, den Anschein einer repräsentativen Demokratie erwecken, so kann man das von Europa nicht behaupten, weder auf der Ebene der EU-Institutionen hier in Brüssel noch auf nationaler Ebene. Auf der Ebene der Union und in weiten Teilen des Kontinents auf nationaler Ebene herrscht eine Koalitionsregierung, die auf institutionalisierte Korruption hinausläuft. Wir, die Bürgerinnen und Bürger, sind irrelevant, wenn eine Koalition von Parteien die Ministerämter als Gefälligkeiten verteilt, ohne Bezug zur Politik oder zur individuellen Kompetenz.

In der ersten Juniwoche finden hier in Europa Parlamentswahlen statt, die kein Grund zum Feiern, sondern zum Verzweifeln sind. Laut Gesetz sind die Belgier verpflichtet, ihre Stimme abzugeben, sonst drohen ihnen Geldstrafen, und so werde auch ich mich zu meiner Wahlkabine in der einen oder anderen Schule in der Nähe begeben und meine Stimme abgeben. Aber für wen? Wie ich bei den letzten Wahlen erfahren habe, sind bei dem einzigen Thema, das mich wirklich interessiert, nämlich der Außenpolitik, alle Parteien bis auf eine für Kiew und den Hass auf Russland. Und diese eine Partei, die Arien aus einer anderen Oper singt, sind die Kommunisten.

Gebt einen leeren Stimmzettel ab, sagen Sie.  Aber hier in Belgien haben leere Stimmzettel bis jetzt ihren Stachel verloren. Diese Stimme wird systematisch proportional auf die offiziellen Parteien entsprechend ihrem Gesamtergebnis aufgeteilt. Allerdings gibt es in diesem Jahr eine Bewegung mit dem Namen “Blanco”, die diese Tradition umstoßen will und verlangt, dass leere Stimmen als “gegen alle” gezählt werden. Wir werden sehen, wie weit diese Initiative geht.

Ungeachtet meiner wirtschaftsfreundlichen, kulturell-traditionellen Einstellung werde ich also im Juni höchstwahrscheinlich den belgischen Kommunisten meine Stimme geben.
