More bad news:  the newly created U.S. coordination center in Stuttgart for Ukraine operations as a landmark on the way to WWIII

Earlier today I received an email from my good friend Professor of Law at the University of Illinois Francis A. Boyle regarding the creation in Stuttgart of a new U.S. coordination center for war operations in Ukraine headed by a 3-star general. The news item seems to have been sidelined this past week by Western mainstream coverage of the Russian withdrawal from Kherson and entry of Ukrainian forces into that city.  However, judging by Boyle’s interpretation, there is every reason to put a spotlight on this issue and to seek the broadest possible discussion in Alternative News electronic and print media.

I offer the following quote from Boyle’s email with his permission:

The story below is a pure cover story by the Pentagon. You do not need a 3 Star General and a Staff of 300 to keep tabs on U.S. Weapons in Ukraine. This is a War Command to wage war against Russia. The last time I dealt personally with a 3 Star General was  when I lectured at West Point on “Nuclear Deterrence” in their Senior Conference on that subject in front of, among others, the 3 Star General in Charge of War Operations at the Pentagon. The Pentagon puts a 3 Stars  General in Charge of War Operations—not Inventory. And you do not need a Headquarters Staff of 300 to do an Audit. It’s a War Headquarters Staff. We are going to war against Russia unless the American People can figure out some way to stop it!

Francis A. Boyle

STUTTGART, Germany — A three-star general will lead a new Army headquarters in Germany that will include about 300 U.S. service members responsible for coordinating security assistance for Ukraine, a senior U.S. military official said this week.

I refer those unfamiliar with Francis Boyle to his brief biography in the University of Illinois website:

https://law.illinois.edu/faculty-research/faculty-profiles/francis-boyle/   To that I can add, that his ‘political science’ studies for the Masters and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard were primarily in Russian/Soviet affairs, and that in his time at Harvard he worked under many of the same professors as did I.  In this sense, Boyle is a well qualified Russia expert, even if his primary listing at Illinois is as defender of human rights.  He is also particularly noteworthy this year for his efforts to promote among several key Congressmen the articles of impeachment against President Biden that he has drafted; the charges – waging undeclared war on Russia in violation of the Constitution. So far that has gained little traction, but when the new Congress with Republican majority takes its seats in 2023 the prospects of finding sponsors may be significantly improved.

Notwithstanding the worrisome or alarming news above, I close this essay with a glimmer of hope that the world has not yet gone completely mad.  From my volunteer translator in Germany, I have learned about the start of what should be a nationwide “Ami Go Home” movement in the Federal Republic. It will begin with mass demonstrations in the East German city of Leipzig on 26 November. The protests are inspired by the thinking of Oskar Lafonteine, a German politician who held leading positions in the SPD and later in Die Linke: namely the notion that it is high time for the United States occupation forces to leave Germany so that the country may recover its sovereignty. Those new to German politics may more easily identify Lafonteine as the husband of the eloquent Opposition member of the Bundestag Sahra Wagenknecht. It behooves me to add that per the advice of my translator when he forwarded to me news about the ‘Ami Go Home’ demonstration that the actual organizers are not on the German Left but, on the contrary, on the Hard Right. This interpretation has been reconfirmed by a well informed reader living in Berlin. Call this yet another ‘impersonation’ or imposter phenomenon if you will. We are living through interesting times.

Francis A. Boyle

    1. I don’t consider you “cynical” at all!

(Hmmm: was my comment of several hours ago about the estimable Professor Boyle censored? It was not annotated with “under moderation” or any other stricture…it duly appeared immediately after I clicked “Post Comment”….)

  1. The US never fights a country that can fight back. Note than Iran which is much weaker than Russia has never been openly attacked.

The ”war-support” vis-a-vis Ukraine in the UK which even more belligerent & neurotic about Russia than the USA.

Is incredibly lazy, shallow, ignorant & passive. Barely enough to support funding Ukraine in light of economic-troubles (that aren’t well understood).

There no appetite to make real sacrifices that war with Russia would entail. What happens when you declare war and no one shows up?

  2. This is nothing new Stuttgart there is a military Ukraine coordination center in Ramstein (near Koln or not far), with 300 usmil and nato people.

There are direct negociations today in Turkey:

Russia and US holding secret talks in Ankara – Kommersant
Moscow is reportedly represented by the country’s top spy at the negotiations RT

    1. Sir, you are knowingly spreading disinformation. Kommersant Daily online leads with the story that “the United States is represented at the negotiations with Russia in Ankara by CIA Director William Burns”. It is therefore sensationalism on your part when you mention only that Russia;s ‘top spy’ (Naryshkin) is there representing Russia. More importantly, the same articl etells us that the CIA Director ‘will not raise the subject of resolving the Ukrainian conflict, but will convey a message about the consequences of possible application by Russia of a nuclear weapon’ More likely they are talking about a prisoner exchange. It is all quite murky at this point.

  3. Putin already considered the possibility of direct intervention when he said: “Today we hear that they want to defeat us on the battlefield. What can you say? Let them try.” It is hard to see which NATO country will be the first to enter the fray with boots on the ground, but maybe the American neo-cons want to give it a try. Maybe it will reveal where those billions spent on “defense” over the years have gone to.

  4. It is a sign of changed times that Oskar Lafontaine is identified as Sahra Wagenknecht’s spouse. I’m sure that he appreciates it however.

  5. The narrative trajectory appears to work like this. The US fights an imperialist war “against Communism” in Vietnam nominally to prevent the “domino effect”: if Vietnam falls to Communism the rest of the world might be next, but in reality to obtain lebensraum for US capital. That war is fought using Americans drafted into military service specfically to fight that war. The draft tears the country apart, and the US’ further military adventures must rely on an all-volunteer Army/Navy/etc. The all-volunteer military participates in a number of new imperialist quests, culminating in the ignominious retreat from Afghanistan. Now, the final step in the trajectory is taking place in Ukraine: Ukrainians are substituting for American troops to depose Vladimir Putin and break up the Russian Federation into easily consumed, resource rich playgrounds for US capital. The creation of the “U.S. coordination center for war operations in Ukraine” perfectly expresses this. No hands get dirty in coordination centers.

This last strategy can be looked at in two ways. First, that it has swayed the public in favor of “imperialism without tears”. Like spectators at a movie who cry at the action on screen, but go home feeling fulfilled emotionally and psychologically, the American public “feels the pain” of the Ukrainians, but is completely untouched by it, able to go about its business without a care in the world. Second, on the other hand, it has hardened the resolve of the one nation on earth capable of opposing it militarily.

In my opinion, the best sources of information about this latest US ploy can be gleaned by referring, first, to newspapers published in Germany during Operation Barbarossa and, second, to Germany’s ultimate success against Russia.

Will there be an all-out nuclear war? Possibly, but as I have said previously, almost all the species on earth save humanity will greet it with a sigh of relief, despite the devastation it will cause, because, as of now, they stand no chance at all.

However terrified of Article 5 the Russians may be, the United States is an order of magnitude more terrified.

  6. Dear Dr. Doctorow,
you mention the demonstration announced for November 26th in Leipzig under the motto “Ami go home”.
I must unfortunately draw your attention to the fact that this demonstration is organized by the right-wing populist camp AfD with the participation of smaller splinter parties, which must be attributed to the extreme right-wing political camp.
This is fatal, because the legitimate concern of the demonstration will be defamed by the mainstream and the media. Unfortunately, there are hardly any similar initiatives from the political center in Germany. Even in the left spectrum with the party Die Linke there is only a minority – led by Sarah Wagenknecht – that points out the causes of the current war, while the party leadership and the majority of its members argue like the NATO mainstream. The last party congress of this party in Erfurt has set the stage for it

In Germany in particular due to it’s history the left understandably is very much wary of the ideals and concepts of national sovereignty particularly when paired with military independence. The same is also true in Japan where the right nationalists often feel frustrated by elements of post-war US military dominance (Such as the constitution which states Japan cannot use it’s military except defensively) and wish to be a ‘normal’ country and the left feels wary of what will happen when they get that power back.

A similar situation caused by Germany’s unique past also saw Americans get confused when most of the early anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine mandate protests in Germany came from middle aged German 68er leftists who had a reactionary aversion to any concepts of government control or ‘statism’.

Since the end of the Soviet Union the left in the West has become less about collectivist (Read: Populist) economic concerns and class politics of the working class and more about individualistic social values and minority concerns.

In essence the left has become trapped in 1968 and it will take the Baby Boomer generation dying off to end this spell. The massive and endless mass migration to Western cities has utterly changed the calculus of who is the victim and who is oppressed by it and the costs associated with immigration. Years of social individualism has also lowered the sense of collective responsibility of those who have towards those who have not. But to paraphrase the Cranberries, “It’s still 1968 in their heads, zombie”. The lack of ability to confront this (Outside Denmark) will destroy the mainstream left as it has absolutely no will to fight or indeed answers and actively seeks to persecute heretics among their ranks and broader society who do ask serious questions.

But those collectivist social values (Read: Nationalism and general conformism and or traditional social values) are very important to the poor and working class who depend much more on the social capital it delivers in their communities and their lives too are much more community-based.

To the working classes of Western cities they see people (Often abusing asylum laws or in the precursors to Brexit millions of people they have no sense of common-feeling for from Eastern Europe who they were never allowed to vote on being allowed to live and work in their country) displacing their communities, essentially existentially threatening them, they have no voice, their concerns are wrong. The implicit and explicit removal of ownership they thought they had over their own country is simply not something to be politically accommodated except for them to simply give until they are gone or they explode into something like ethnic politics or fascism.

To the middle and upper middle classes of the West they don’t see any of this, they are not (Yet) so affected by immigration, it’s not their schools or streets where they are so displaced (Yet) and so they conclude the working classes are simply evil and insane, assuming that simultaneously it’s inevitable that they become ethnically displaced and also that immigrants are so few they must be protected from endless pogroms that are always implicitly claimed to be

The desire for the end of neoliberalism and ‘wokeness’ is really a desire for normal politics and real democracy (Which is why this can’t be shamed or censored away, people aren’t trying to steal something, they are trying to get what is their natural right) it’s a desire for collectivist economic (Populist economics over neoliberalism) and collectivist social (Populist and majoritarian nationalism over ‘woke’ anti-nationalism) policies. The left considers individualist and anti-nationalist policies as not just preferred but sacred and religious theories and so the mainstream left will not be the host for any of this. Thus it is taking root in the right, It is easier to turn the right, the originator of neoliberalism to economic populism than it is to take the left away from social individualism and anti-nationalism. That is what we are seeing. The Front Nationale has gone from a reactionary neo-fascist party to one concerned with immigration (Itself not just a socially collectivist nationalist policy but an economic populist one) to one that has essentially become left wing economically by simply virtue of conforming to it’s constituents preferences. Indeed it is now rebranded ‘National Rally’ to reflect this becoming essentially a new party.

We have seen the middle and upper middle classes (As well as the rich) become extreme ‘anywheres’ who live in a fantasy world economically (To the extent they even think about economics) and one where social media outrage over social and religious (The ‘woke’ religion of anti-nationalism and anti-populism) becomes their sole reality, the pillow over the face of the workign class (And themselves but they don’t see it yet) that is neoliberalism is seen as having no alternative and to be defended because the only apparent alternative is fascism they believe. And so like Russia was not allowed to be at peace with the US, they decide the working class cannot be at peace with them, that their grievances are imaginary and the result of Russian ‘disinformation’.

    1. I hope that there can be a solution other than people of my age dying off.
Something political perhaps. The impotence of the ‘left’ is explicable in terms quite different from those that you employ. But, yes, it is there.
On the other hand movements like Syriza, Podemos, Melenchon’s alliance, Die Linke itself and Corbyn’s Labour did erupt out of the population, and past traditions of radical socialism. And the conditions that gave rise to their birth are, as AfD shows, not diminishing.
My own view is that socialists need to address questions of leadership and democratic practice in their own organisation (and those of the Unions) if they are ever going to be able to deal with the practicalities of power. It is so easy to cripple and sabotage movements in which power is concentrated in the hands of salaried officials, most of them dependent on the state or the state’s indulgence. Put simply: the option of making a career out of socialist politics should not exist.
Underneath all the rubbish left over by ’68 there was a core principle most honoured in the breach, of course, of popular democracy, workers control and permanent sessions- the soviet model, in fact, of 1905 vintage.

  8. just add it to the other 800+ (known) bases the US has throughout the world. i’ll be more concerned when western thugs start showing up in moldova and/or odessa while it’s still part of “ukraine”. it’s a safe bet this guy earned his stars as part of the 101st chairborne like all the other generals who – at most – spent their careers shooting tomahawks at arabs armed with rocks and molotovs.

if the pattern of ukie “victories” keeps up he’ll have a string of glorious marches into empty villages to brag about. the russians will continue to play chess while this guy plays checkers. not worried.
