Are the Chinese nice?

Without mincing words, my answer to the question is that the Chinese are not nice. They are dignified, they are hard working and commercially minded.  They pay all due respect to professional competence and operate a system of governance that might fairly be described as a meritocracy.  But they are not nice in the sense of tolerant of the sins and transgressions of others. They are not Good Christians.

That is where the Chinese should not be confused with the Russian leadership, in which President Vladimir Putin has over the two plus decades at the helm always shown restraint and frequently turned the other cheek when he and his country were abused by the United States and its allies.

Putin’s Christian convictions and the behavior that follow from them have led his domestic critics among super patriots to harshly condemn the way the war in Ukraine or Special Military Operation, if you will, is being prosecuted. Russia has the capability to decapitate the Kiev regime at any time but has not done anything of the kind. Instead it has regularly permitted Western heads of government to visit with Zelensky at his headquarters as if the country were at peace. Russia has allowed the United States to repeatedly cross its declared red lines without punishment.  All that we hear is the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Maria Zakharova wail “can you imagine!” She is as closely bound to that lament as Theresa May was to “highly likely.”

Regrettably, judging by the U.S. activities with respect to Taiwan over the past couple of weeks, Washington does not seem to appreciate the difference between Russia and China in temperament of the leaders and national cultures.

In his present declining state, Biden has no memory. But where is the memory of his younger circle of advisers and assistants?  Why are Blinken and Sullivan and Austin ignoring the lessons of the Cuban Missile Crisis as they prepare to supply Taiwan with weapons that are as provocative and threatening to China as Khrushchev’s delivery of nuclear tipped missiles was to Cuba in 1962?  Where is their memory of the antecedents of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor when Senator Lindsey Graham is allowed to publicly call for disruption of the sea lanes bringing oil to China from the Middle East?  I have not heard or seen any criticism of this proposal from the White House.

The Chinese are not big talkers, but they are decisive actors. I have no doubt that if they believe the United States has crossed their red lines regarding aid to Taiwan and interference in the island’s domestic politics to favor independence, then the Chinese will strike. They surely have done their calculations. If they sink America’s aircraft carrier task force in the South China Sea or sink the entire U.S. Pacific fleet as Japan once did under similar circumstances, will the USA launch nuclear missiles and put its own national survival at risk?  The answer is a flat no.

For the above acts of reckless endangerment of the Continental U.S., in addition to the violations of perjury before Congress in testimony over the preparedness of Ukraine for a counter-offensive against Russia that contradicts the Pentagon and CIA documents leaked over social media a couple of weeks ago, Biden and many of his team deserve impeachment. Now, before the Chinese show just how un-nice they can be.

  1. I am not sure that I agree with your analysis. My guess is that the “discipline” in Putin’s behaviour is determined more by his background in the KGB and martial arts than by his Christianity. Further, it is not as though Putin is totally risk adverse- think Georgia, Crimea and Donbass…. (Gordon Hahn has an interesting article on Putin the risk taker: Google “gordon hahn putin risk taker”) Perhaps the difference in behaviour between Russia and China in responding to outside threats, if there is any, is best explained by the two countries’ different histories, cultures and circumstances. For what it is worth, and that’s very little, I don’t think it very likely that it will come to the situation where US aircraft carriers are sunk as they can easily be kept out of harm’s way. (Then you don’t have to “back down” by not using nuclear weapons.)

    1. How? These hypersonic missiles cannot be seen (no radar reflection because of the plasma nose cone that forms), and the kinzhal that hit Iavarov was not even detected by nato until it struck. What defense does the US have … their efforts at intercepting ballistic missiles have been far from successful, let alone a missile salvo that is net-centrically co-ordinated and maneuvers. The Chinese developed the DF21 against this very scenario. They are indubitably talking to Russia about Zircon technology (1500km radius, probably 2000 in future iterations).

      1. Simple, stay 2001 km away. Why would you wish to sink a ship that can do you no harm? If I were a Russian or Chinese strategist I would be perfectly happy if the US were to waste its money building even more carriers. (On the other hand, I would think it very unwise if HMS Defender were to enter Crimean waters again. They are keeping their distance already don’t you think?)

  2. The whole bit of “Russia has the capability to decapitate the Kiev regime at any time…” does not past the smell test. It is a premise without backing and all evidence points to Russia does not have the capability, short of nuclear weapons. Everything else kinda falls apart if you take that away.

    1. Well, Russia has shown they can destroy any site in Ukraine via the use of hypersonic missiles. Russian restraint is not a good reason to expect that they cannot do the deed, in my own opinion.

    2. Russia wouldn’t have the slightest problem in flattening any city in the Ukraine, Kiev included. Or did you never hear of the actual Russian armaments, capabilities? But Russian leadership is too wise, too mature to do so.
In fact, the US is trying to destroy the Ukraine so that it would be a worthless partner of Russia in a possible future regained alliance. Look at how all Soviet-era weapons are being sacrificed: the MIG’s and Tanks of all of previous Soviet-aligned countries/ Warshaw Pact, they are thrown in a battlefield where Russia will, cannot but, destroy them.. They will be gone shortly, just as the young male population of the Ukraine will be lost and that’s a gain for the totally immoral elite in the US. Russia hated to attack the Ukraine because, except for the Nazi minority, they were seen as brethren, not as ennemies in se. And the US made the brethren fight to the death. As they did in so many regions of the world.

Now we can only sigh a breath of relief (I hope for some time still…) that Putin and Xi are too wise to escalate and send the US aircraft carriers to the bottom of the sea (which they would not find difficult to do either) or worse still, launch the nuclear missiles. We could only wish that the American politicians were half as intelligent, wise or humane – they clearly are not.

  3. So the Chinese have been smart enough to avoid being found out.
When Push came to shove Yeltsin was over nice leaving Putin little choice later on.
But no one wants to push China that far.
    I call that smart

  4. Putin has an excellent track record. As Gordon Hahn concludes (2015) in the article recommended by davidt: “all his risk-taking decisions have been successes or are still playing out and have good potential for ending in success”. With regard to the current Chinese leadership, there is not as much to go on in terms of confronting the West. There have been more words and less action perhaps in comparison to Russia. Obviously (in my opinion) a war over Taiwan benefits no one, and it is curious that the U.S. has decided to provoke China at this time, pushing China closer to Russia. Current Chinese weapons are relatively untested in actual combat, whereas Japan had been actively fighting (in China) long before attacking the U.S. and Britain. So my guess is that the Chinese are more conservative than Russia with regard to militarily confronting the U.S. China will stick close to Russia as a result, as their risk may be less if coordinated with Russian military activities. For example, a gradual escalation of the Russian – U.S. hostilities could give China a chance to test their weapons and soldiers in a less than existential theater.

    1. I think Putin is actually very risk averse.
Doesn’t have a gambling bone in his body.
Putin is that guy that always plays to win — and doesn’t play games where luck is a factor.

  5. Biden is the consummately and entirely evil Hillary Clinton in drag. This woman, whose vindictiveness must have reached galactic proportions when the Presidency she was to condescend to accept was rudely snatched away from her by… Donald Trump? By the American people, who correctly found her repelent in every human way. Now, each one of Biden’s actions beyond our shores (Nuland’s action, Blinken’s actions, Team Hillary) expresses the incalculable anger and wild thrashing for revenge of their mistress. That is where the problem lies, and it will never go away until this congerie of psychopaths is removed from power. Which it may never be.

I sure hope you’re right, but I have no confidence that you are.

We are being led to the brink by ignorance and hubris and our Fearless Leaders don’t know when to stop doubling down. By the time they realize the real risks, it will be too late and we will all be dust.
