As  I indicated in my last essay, a great deal of information that would allow one independently to come to a comprehensive understanding of what is going on in the world is available in mainstream media, however counterintuitive that may be for those who revile the Washington narrative and its commercial purveyors.  However, the facts we need to know are either buried deep in articles that have titles and opening paragraphs that contradict the content lower down OR as I wrote in that last essay, they are separate dots that are never connected by the journalists and their editors to draw the big picture they do not want to see.

My case today is not taken from the Ukraine war but from its consequences: the visible and statistically demonstrated decline of the European economy and in particular of the country that has long been celebrated as its locomotive, Germany.

This issue has featured in much of the reporting of The Financial Times and other major media these last several weeks when numbers for the economic performance at the end of last year and start of this year have been published. The latest growth estimate for Europe put out by the European Central Bank is an anemic 0.6% while Germany is likely entering a second quarter of recession.

A lot has been written about the leading causes of the bad economic results, in the expectation that once they are identified suitable corrective measures can be put in place. Of late, attention has been directed at the weak capital markets in Europe, compared to the United States, for example, all of which deprives industry of funds for investment that will raise productivity and make Europe more competitive on world markets.

Additional points for discussion are eagerly awaited from Mario Draghi, former Italian prime minister and former President of the European Central Bank, who has been tasked by the European Commission to deliver recommendations on how European competitiveness might be improved.

However, these approaches overlook the fact that deficient capital markets and the many other handicaps that Draghi is likely to name have been around for a long time but that the present stark weakness of the German economy is something very new and, frankly astonishing, to anyone who cares to look at the figures on the collapse of German automobile manufacturing, for example.

Going back six months or more there were articles in our press and feature programs on the BBC and other media recounting how German industrialists are moving abroad and making new manufacturing investments there rather than in their homeland.  At that time the high cost of energy ever since Russian pipeline gas was discontinued following the destruction of Nord Stream I was openly mentioned as a factor in the deindustrialization of Germany.

However, that objectivity and frankness has since been put aside. In a BBC report on German industry a week ago, I heard that high energy costs due to the end of cheap Russian gas is not a significant factor in Germany’s economic travails since only 6% of German industry is very energy dependent.

Today, when European gas prices have dropped dramatically from the record levels of late 2022, there is some truth in reducing the weight we give to energy when explaining the German economic decline that is ongoing. However, natural gas has a far greater role in economic and social life than just to fuel the metallurgical or glass industries.  It also is feedstock for the chemical and related industries as well as for fertilizers needed to maintain German and European agricultural output.  Moreover, the decision of the German and European governments to prioritize geopolitics over domestic economic performance has been a very clear message to industry that Europe is not the place they want to be. Industrialists may not say much in public, but their falling investment here speaks volumes.

The facts are so obvious when you look at them that even the propagandists at The Financial Times have been obliged to give them space. See the article a day ago entitled “German industry unlikely to fully recover from energy crisis, warns RWE boss.” Here you see it in black and white: “German industry is unlikely to recover to pre-Ukraine war levels as elevated prices from imported liquefied natural gas have put Europe’s largest economy at a ‘disadvantage’, the chief of one of Germany’s leading energy companies has warned.”

This is not Russian propaganda.  It is highly authoritative and responsible German executives speaking and they are reported in the viciously anti-Russian FT.  No investigative journalists like Sy Hersh need apply to light the way for the general public.

Europas sinkende Wirtschaft: Wie viele Ursachen können wir nennen und dabei den Faktor Russland ignorieren?

Wie ich in meinem letzten Aufsatz angedeutet habe, finden sich in den Mainstream-Medien viele Informationen, die es einem ermöglichen würden, sich unabhängig ein umfassendes Bild davon zu machen, was in der Welt vor sich geht, so kontraintuitiv das auch für diejenigen sein mag, die das Washingtoner Narrativ und seine kommerziellen Überbringer verachten. Die Fakten, die wir wissen müssen, sind jedoch entweder tief in Artikeln vergraben, deren Titel und einleitende Absätze dem Inhalt weiter unten widersprechen, oder sie sind, wie ich in diesem letzten Aufsatz schrieb, einzelne Punkte, die von den Journalisten und ihren Redakteuren nie miteinander verbunden werden, um das große Bild zu zeichnen, das sie nicht sehen wollen.

Mein heutiger Fall bezieht sich nicht auf den Krieg in der Ukraine, sondern auf seine Folgen: den sichtbaren und statistisch belegten Niedergang der europäischen Wirtschaft und insbesondere des Landes, das lange Zeit als ihre Lokomotive gefeiert wurde, Deutschland.

Dieses Thema hat in den letzten Wochen einen Großteil der Berichterstattung der Financial Times und anderer großer Medien bestimmt, als die Zahlen für die Wirtschaftsleistung zum Ende des letzten und Anfang dieses Jahres veröffentlicht wurden. Die jüngste Wachstumsschätzung der Europäischen Zentralbank für Europa beläuft sich auf magere 0,6 %, während Deutschland wahrscheinlich in ein zweites Quartal der Rezession eintritt.

Es wurde viel über die Hauptursachen für die schlechten wirtschaftlichen Ergebnisse geschrieben, in der Erwartung, dass, sobald sie identifiziert sind, geeignete Korrekturmaßnahmen ergriffen werden können. In letzter Zeit wurde die Aufmerksamkeit auf die im Vergleich zu den Vereinigten Staaten schwachen Kapitalmärkte in Europa gelenkt, die der Industrie Mittel für Investitionen vorenthalten, die die Produktivität steigern und Europa auf den Weltmärkten wettbewerbsfähiger machen würden.

Weitere Diskussionspunkte werden mit Spannung von Mario Draghi, dem ehemaligen italienischen Ministerpräsidenten und ehemaligen Präsidenten der Europäischen Zentralbank, erwartet, der von der Europäischen Kommission beauftragt wurde, Empfehlungen zur Verbesserung der europäischen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit vorzulegen.

Dabei wird jedoch übersehen, dass es unzulängliche Kapitalmärkte und die vielen anderen Handicaps, die Draghi wahrscheinlich aufzählen wird, schon seit langem gibt, dass aber die derzeitige eklatante Schwäche der deutschen Wirtschaft etwas ganz Neues ist und, offen gesagt, für jeden, der sich die Zahlen über den Zusammenbruch der deutschen Automobilproduktion ansieht, erstaunlich ist.

Vor mehr als sechs Monaten wurde in der Presse und in Sendungen der BBC und anderer Medien darüber berichtet, dass deutsche Industrielle ins Ausland abwandern und dort neue Investitionen tätigen, anstatt in ihrem Heimatland zu produzieren. Damals wurden die hohen Energiekosten, die seit dem Wegfall der russischen Gaspipeline nach der Zerstörung von Nord Stream I anfallen, offen als ein Faktor für die Deindustrialisierung Deutschlands genannt.

Diese Objektivität und Offenheit wurde jedoch inzwischen beiseite geschoben. In einem BBC-Bericht über die deutsche Industrie vor einer Woche hörte ich, dass die hohen Energiekosten aufgrund des Wegfalls des billigen russischen Gases kein wesentlicher Faktor für die wirtschaftliche Misere in Deutschland seien, da nur 6 % der deutschen Industrie stark energieabhängig seien.

Heute, da die europäischen Gaspreise gegenüber den Rekordwerten von Ende 2022 drastisch gesunken sind, ist es richtig, dass wir der Energie bei der Erklärung des anhaltenden wirtschaftlichen Niedergangs in Deutschland weniger Bedeutung beimessen. Erdgas spielt jedoch im wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Leben eine weitaus größere Rolle als nur als Brennstoff für die Metall- oder Glasindustrie. Es ist auch Ausgangsstoff für die chemische und verwandte Industrien sowie für Düngemittel, die zur Aufrechterhaltung der deutschen und europäischen landwirtschaftlichen Produktion benötigt werden. Darüber hinaus war die Entscheidung der deutschen und europäischen Regierungen, der Geopolitik Vorrang vor der heimischen Wirtschaftsleistung einzuräumen, eine sehr klare Botschaft an die Industrie, dass Europa nicht der Ort ist, an dem sie sein möchte. Industrielle mögen in der Öffentlichkeit nicht viel sagen, aber ihre sinkenden Investitionen hier sprechen Bände.

Die Fakten sind so offensichtlich, dass sogar die Propagandisten der Financial Times gezwungen waren, ihnen Raum zu geben. Siehe den Artikel von vorgestern mit der Überschrift “German industry unlikely to fully recover from energy crisis, warns RWE boss” (“Die deutsche Industrie wird sich wahrscheinlich nicht vollständig von der Energiekrise erholen, warnt der RWE-Chef”). Hier sehen Sie es schwarz auf weiß: “Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass sich die deutsche Industrie auf das Niveau vor dem Ukraine-Krieg erholt, da die hohen Preise für importiertes Flüssiggas Europas größte Volkswirtschaft ‘benachteiligt’ haben, warnte der Chef eines der führenden deutschen Energieunternehmen.”

Dies ist keine russische Propaganda. Es sind höchst maßgebliche und verantwortungsbewusste deutsche Führungskräfte, die hier sprechen und über die in der bösartig antirussischen FT berichtet wird. Investigative Journalisten wie Sy Hersh brauchen sich nicht zu bewerben, um für die Öffentlichkeit Licht ins Dunkel zu bringen.

No news is good news….

For those who wonder why I have not posted any commentary for nearly a week, I have a straightforward explanation. This silence has had nothing to do with the Easter holidays, which have sent many folks on vacation and disrupted work schedules in many European countries.  No, it has to do with global news, or the relative absence of it. The war in Gaza grinds on. The war in Ukraine grinds on. But there has been no dramatic turn of events in these conflicts or elsewhere in the world to grab the headlines of our media and require comment from talking heads.

On the other hand, when there is breaking news, I do not hesitate to issue more than one commentary article on a given day.

In recent days, international news in the West has been dominated by the Gaza conflict. We have heard how Biden came close to condemning Israeli atrocities and failed military operations in Gaza. We have heard about the Israeli withdrawal from Southern Gaza, which is interpreted either as a concession to the ‘or else’ threats coming out of Washington or as a prelude to the long announced attack on Rafah, depending on whom you want to believe.

However, in Russia the international and domestic news remains focused on the Ukraine conflict. Day after day, Russian state television provides not only statistics on destroyed Ukrainian planes, tanks, Himars and other rocket artillery units as well as headcounts of the killed and maimed enemy forces, but also relevant video coverage of these successes. 

For the layman, it is difficult to see the results of these successes on maps of the line of contact between the opposing sides.  The Russian officials are knowingly playing down their daily advance westward, calling it just positional improvements. They do not want to telegraph their punches or to give Western media cause for alarm before they spring the several traps for Ukraine’s army that will come when they break through the Ukrainian defense lines later this spring and summer.

And in parallel with the destruction on the line of contact, the Russians are actively waging what the Moscow-based journalist John Helmer has rightly called an ‘electricity war’ on Ukraine, utterly demolishing an increasing number of power generating plants across the country.

Even the pro-Ukrainian Financial Times two days ago finally published an article describing the attacks on power infrastructure as having taken a new and very dangerous turn for the viability of Ukraine.

Moreover, here and there Western media are reporting on another powerful escalation in the Russian prosecution of the war:  the wide and growing use of repurposed Soviet vintage ‘dumb bombs’ that are now maneuverable ‘glide bombs’ carrying between 500 kg and 3 tons of explosives. These cheap weapons have a range of 60 to 90 km and land within 10 meters of target. They are unstoppable and achieve many times the devastation of artillery shells. Indeed they are fully capable of clearing paths through any of the defense lines that the Ukrainians are now constructing posthaste in anticipation of a Russian offensive.

I stress that these various significant developments in the war appear as separate news items in Western media, but without anyone linking the dots. When you do that, it becomes obvious that all the brave talk about the Ukrainians being propped up and reinforced for the sake of a counter-offensive in 2025, all of the brave talk about a 5-year military assistance package for Ukraine amount to empty blather. If the war continues on its present trajectory, there soon enough will not be a Ukraine to prop up.

Day after day on Russian state television, we also hear about the latest progress of the FSB and other law enforcement agencies in uncovering the financial channels and equipment supply channels linking Ukraine to the terror attack on the Crocus City Hall entertainment complex.

These same news reports also take the lines of responsibility all the way to the USA and the UK.  The role of the USA in assisting and promoting the formation of the Islamic State terror groups from the time of the Obama administration is fleshed out. There is no backtracking from the first remarks made by FSB director Bortnikov on the subject of who stood behind the Crocus City attack.

The one non-Ukraine and non-Israeli big news item of last week both in the West and in Russia was the celebration in Brussels of the 75^th anniversary of the signing of the agreements that created NATO. Coverage was not particularly exuberant in Western Europe because the NATO countries were unable to reach unanimous accord on the way forward with respect to Ukraine in their discussions just ahead of the cake cutting ceremony.

In Russia, no detail of the NATO celebration was too insignificant to be overlooked. We heard and saw how the caterers of the NATO event failed to provide forks, so that the high and mighty ate their piece of cake with their fingers.

Of considerably greater importance, we saw on last Sunday’s News of the Week program  hosted by Dmitry Kiselyov an extensive account of the ‘pre-history’ of the NATO treaty, with a fair dose of conspiracy theories set out that bring to the door of Harry Truman and Winston Churchill responsibility for the start of the Cold War.

Kiselyov emphasized Franklin Roosevelt’s neutral and objective appreciation of the Soviet contribution to the war effort, which ran counter to the views of the anti-Russian Churchill and his newfound fellow thinker U.S. Vice President Truman.  Roosevelt’s sudden death from a stroke just days before the Victory in Europe is said to have been possibly a case of poisoning, which Truman and his followers in the Oval Office up to and including John F. Kennedy refused to investigate by barring any exhumation of the body for tests. Moreover, Roosevelt’s quick burial hints at a cover-up, we are told

The net result of FDR’s death was unholy plotting of Truman as his successor, with Churchill’s blessing, to remove the USSR as a Great Power by dropping nuclear bombs on its 20 largest cities.  This scheme was not implemented, per Kiselyov, only because the U.S. lacked the bombs and while it worked to manufacture them the Soviet Union developed and tested its own A-bomb, putting an end to America’s nuclear monopoly and restoring a semblance of deterrence.

There is nothing new in what Kiselyov presented, but it is important that he laid out the story now because it is preparing the Russian people for all eventualities in the evolution of the Ukraine war into a Russia-NATO war.

Für diejenigen, die sich wundern, warum ich seit fast einer Woche keinen Kommentar mehr veröffentlicht habe, habe ich eine einfache Erklärung parat. Dieses Schweigen hat nichts mit den Osterfeiertagen zu tun, die viele Menschen in den Urlaub geschickt und die Arbeitspläne in vielen europäischen Ländern durcheinander gebracht haben. Nein, es hat mit den weltweiten Nachrichten zu tun, oder dem relativen Fehlen von Nachrichten. Der Krieg im Gaza-Streifen geht weiter. Der Krieg in der Ukraine geht weiter. Aber weder in diesen Konflikten noch anderswo in der Welt gibt es dramatische Ereignisse, die die Schlagzeilen unserer Medien beherrschen und Kommentare von Talking Heads erfordern.

Andererseits zögere ich nicht, mehr als einen Kommentar an einem Tag zu veröffentlichen, wenn es aktuelle Nachrichten gibt.

In den letzten Tagen wurden die internationalen Nachrichten im Westen durch den Gaza-Konflikt beherrscht. Wir haben gehört, wie Biden kurz davor stand, die israelischen Gräueltaten und gescheiterten Militäroperationen in Gaza zu verurteilen. Wir haben vom israelischen Rückzug aus dem südlichen Gazastreifen gehört, der entweder als Zugeständnis an die “Sonst”-Drohungen aus Washington oder als Vorspiel für den seit langem angekündigten Angriff auf Rafah gedeutet wird, je nachdem, wem man glauben will.

In Russland konzentrieren sich die internationalen und nationalen Nachrichten jedoch weiterhin auf den Ukraine-Konflikt. Tag für Tag liefert das russische Staatsfernsehen nicht nur Statistiken über zerstörte ukrainische Flugzeuge, Panzer, Himars und andere Raketenartillerie-Einheiten sowie die Anzahl der getöteten und verstümmelten feindlichen Kräfte, sondern auch einschlägige Videoberichte über diese Erfolge.

Für den Laien ist es schwierig, die Ergebnisse dieser Erfolge auf Karten der Kontaktlinie zwischen den gegnerischen Seiten zu erkennen. Die russischen Offiziellen spielen ihren täglichen Vormarsch nach Westen bewusst herunter und bezeichnen ihn lediglich als Positionsverbesserung. Sie wollen ihre Schläge nicht ankündigen und den westlichen Medien keinen Anlass zur Beunruhigung geben, bevor sie der ukrainischen Armee mehrere Fallen stellen, wenn sie die ukrainischen Verteidigungslinien in diesem Frühjahr und Sommer durchbrechen.

Und parallel zu den Zerstörungen an der Kontaktlinie führen die Russen aktiv das, was der in Moskau lebende Journalist John Helmer zu Recht einen “Stromkrieg” gegen die Ukraine genannt hat, indem sie eine wachsende Zahl von Stromerzeugungsanlagen im ganzen Land völlig zerstören.

Sogar die pro-ukrainische Financial Times veröffentlichte vor zwei Tagen einen Artikel, in dem sie die Angriffe auf die Energieinfrastruktur als eine neue und sehr gefährliche Entwicklung für die Lebensfähigkeit der Ukraine bezeichnete.

Darüber hinaus berichten westliche Medien hier und da über eine weitere starke Eskalation in der russischen Kriegsführung: den breiten und zunehmenden Einsatz von umfunktionierten sogenannten „dumb bombs“ aus sowjetischer Zeit, die jetzt als manövrierfähige “Gleitbomben” mit 500 kg bis 3 Tonnen Sprengstoff eingesetzt werden. Diese billigen Waffen haben eine Reichweite von 60 bis 90 km und landen innerhalb von 10 Metern vor dem Ziel. Sie sind unaufhaltsam und erreichen ein Vielfaches der Zerstörungskraft von Artilleriegranaten. Sie sind durchaus in der Lage, sich einen Weg durch die Verteidigungslinien zu bahnen, die die Ukrainer jetzt in Erwartung einer russischen Offensive in aller Eile errichten.

Ich betone, dass diese verschiedenen wichtigen Entwicklungen im Krieg in den westlichen Medien als separate Nachrichten erscheinen, ohne dass jemand die Punkte miteinander verbindet. Wenn man das tut, wird klar, dass all das tapfere Gerede über die Unterstützung und Verstärkung der Ukrainer im Hinblick auf eine Gegenoffensive im Jahr 2025, all das tapfere Gerede über ein fünfjähriges militärisches Hilfspaket für die Ukraine nur leeres Geschwätz ist. Wenn der Krieg so weitergeht wie bisher, wird es bald keine Ukraine mehr geben, die man stützen könnte.

Tag für Tag hören wir im russischen Staatsfernsehen auch von den jüngsten Fortschritten des FSB und anderer Strafverfolgungsbehörden bei der Aufdeckung der Finanz- und Ausrüstungskanäle, die die Ukraine mit dem Terroranschlag auf den Vergnügungskomplex Crocus City Hall verbinden.

In denselben Berichten wird auch die Verantwortung bis in die USA und das Vereinigte Königreich verlagert. Die Rolle der USA bei der Unterstützung und Förderung der Bildung der Terrorgruppen des Islamischen Staates seit der Zeit der Obama-Regierung wird ausführlich dargestellt. Von den ersten Äußerungen des FSB-Direktors Bortnikow zur Frage, wer hinter dem Krokus-City-Anschlag steht, wird nicht abgerückt.

Die einzige große Nachricht der letzten Woche, die weder die Ukraine noch Israel betraf, war sowohl im Westen als auch in Russland die Feier zum 75. Jahrestag der Unterzeichnung der NATO-Vereinbarungen. Die Berichterstattung in Westeuropa war nicht besonders überschwänglich, da die NATO-Länder bei ihren Gesprächen kurz vor dem Anschneiden der Torte keine einstimmige Einigung über das weitere Vorgehen in Bezug auf die Ukraine erzielen konnten.

In Russland war kein Detail der NATO-Feier zu unbedeutend, um übersehen zu werden. Wir hörten und sahen, wie die Caterer der NATO-Veranstaltung keine Gabeln zur Verfügung stellten, so dass die hohen und mächtigen Gäste ihr Stück Kuchen mit den Fingern aßen.

Von weitaus größerer Bedeutung war die von Dmitri Kisseljow moderierte Sendung “Nachrichten der Woche” am vergangenen Sonntag, in der er ausführlich über die “Vorgeschichte” des NATO-Vertrags berichtete und eine gehörige Portion Verschwörungstheorien aufstellte, die Harry Truman und Winston Churchill die Verantwortung für den Beginn des Kalten Krieges in die Schuhe schoben.

Kisseljow hob Franklin Roosevelts neutrale und objektive Einschätzung des sowjetischen Beitrags zu den Kriegsanstrengungen hervor, die im Gegensatz zu den Ansichten des antirussischen Churchill und seines neu entdeckten Mitdenkers, des amerikanischen Vizepräsidenten Truman, stand. Roosevelts plötzlicher Tod durch einen Schlaganfall nur wenige Tage vor dem Sieg in Europa soll möglicherweise auf eine Vergiftung zurückzuführen sein, deren Untersuchung Truman und seine Gefolgsleute im Oval Office bis hin zu John F. Kennedy verweigerten, indem sie jede Exhumierung der Leiche zu Testzwecken untersagten. Außerdem deutet Roosevelts schnelle Beerdigung auf eine Vertuschung hin, heißt es.

Nach dem Tod von Roosevelt plante Truman als sein Nachfolger mit Churchills Segen, die UdSSR als Großmacht zu beseitigen, indem Atombomben auf ihre 20 größten Städte abgeworfen werden sollten. Dieser Plan wurde laut Kisseljow nur deshalb nicht umgesetzt, weil die USA nicht über die nötigen Bomben verfügten und die Sowjetunion, während sie an deren Herstellung arbeitete, ihre eigene A-Bombe entwickelte und testete, womit sie Amerikas Nuklearmonopol beendete und den Anschein der Abschreckung wiederherstellte.

Die Ausführungen von Kisseljow sind nicht neu, aber es ist wichtig, dass er die Geschichte jetzt darlegt, denn sie bereitet das russische Volk auf alle Eventualitäten vor für den Fall, dass sich der Krieg in der Ukraine zu einem Krieg zwischen Russland und der NATO entwickeln sollte.

A democratically priced eatery appealing to the latest Letter generation and located on the Chaussée d’Ixelles, in the heart of the Brussels commune (borough) of Ixelles, just 500 meters from the Aparthotel where I am currently spending a month transitioning from a sold house to a purchased apartment, has the quirky sign out on the sidewalk:  “Liberté, Egalité et Poulet!”  Indeed, hot roast chicken is their mainstay, served with frites and mayo.

If only the traditions of the French revolution were all in jest like this eatery’s welcoming message. 

But no, the French Revolution was…a bloody affair in which all semblance of rule of law was tossed out the window, including, of course freedom of speech.

Regrettably, that essential Bolshevism in French political life did not come to an end in 1815 when the Napoleonic wars were brought to a halt on the Waterloo battlefield just 20 kilometers from where I write to you. The worst of the French Revolution is still with us, as I learned this evening from a petition that was sent my way by the offspring of White Russian émigrés who settled in this country a hundred years ago. White Russians know a thing or two about Bolshevism and can be counted upon to denounce its rearing its ugly head in the Hexagon today. They are keenly interested in the issue because whatever the French in France say and do, French speakers in Belgium say and do following a brief delay.

What I am talking about is the project now underway in the French parliament to further turn the screws on anyone betraying present day political correctness on issues of gender, ethnicity and all the other key elements of identity politics in PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS.  Not in public, not on the airwaves, but in the privacy of your own home or otherwise behind closed doors.

To be specific, the parliament has passed in a first reading a very nasty modification to the existing Article R625-7 of the French penal code, which was itself no gift to free thinkers. The present version of that Article set out by Decree in 2017 reads:

La provocation non publique à la discrimination, à la haine ou à la violence à l’égard d’une personne ou d’un groupe de personnes à raison de leur origine ou de leur appartenance ou de leur non-appartenance, vraie ou supposée, à une ethnie, une nation, une prétendue race ou une religion déterminée est punie de l’amende prévue pour les contraventions de la 5e classe.

Day by day, the Russian security officials are expanding upon their claims that Ukraine financed and directed the terror attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue. Sunday evening’s edition of News of the Week hosted by Dmitry Kiselyov pointed to crypto currency payments and other financial channels which were used by the Ukrainians, as the latest results of interrogations and further arrests have revealed. A substantial success reward is said to have awaited the assailants upon arrival in Kiev.

Meanwhile various Western media outlets including Deutsche Welle tell us the Kremlin has demanded the hand-over of the head of Kiev’s Security Service (SSB), brigadier general Vasyl Malyuk on charges of directing terrorist attacks in Russia. To be sure, Malyuk himself has claimed responsibility for the 2022 bombing of the Kerch (Crimea) bridge. But we may now assume that the Russians have evidence to hold him to account for directing the Crocus City Hall atrocity.

There is speculation in social media that Kiev’s refusal to surrender its terror campaign leaders would allow Russia to declare Ukraine a terrorist state. This would open the possibility for ‘neutralizing’ top Ukrainian officials on justifiable grounds.

However, we need not speculate about what may come next. De facto, Russia’s current offensive against Ukraine has escalated to a new, vastly more threatening level. There are daily punishing aerial bombing and missile attacks on military command centers across Ukraine, on training centers, on concentrations of foreign mercenaries. And then there is a new dimension to the destruction of Ukraine’s electricity network.

In the winter of 2022-2023, all the Western media spoke of Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure, on how Russia was allegedly seeking to impose misery on the Ukrainian civilians by depriving them of heat and light in the midst of freezing cold. But back then the reality was that Russia only struck substations and other distribution points.  Such destruction was meant to knock out power for tactical advantage over the Ukrainian armed forces. It was obvious that the substations and other gear could be replaced in a matter of weeks or months.  By contrast what is now going on is Russian destruction of power generating stations. Replacing them will be a matter of years, not months.

Very much to the point, the mayor of Kharkiv yesterday remarked to the press that the city’s power supplies have been utterly destroyed.  This development corresponds very nicely to the calls that were  made on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov talk show last week for Kharkiv’s inhabitants to be sent packing in their cars headed west ahead of the city being razed to the ground. The intent was to end once and for all the missiles and artillery shells that Kharkiv has been sending daily into the neighboring Belgorod region of Russia to kill civilians in the greatest numbers possible.  Kharkiv may not yet be razed, but it certainly is on the way to becoming uninhabitable.

In the face of this massive and undeniable destruction by the Russians both on and off the battlefield, the bravado of Zelensky and his clique is fading. Indeed, the Ukrainian president has finally said publicly that it may be time for peace negotiations.

Let us hope that Russia’s post Crocus viciousness may bring the Ukrainians to their senses and end this awful war.

And this is in connection with something else which has been very little reported in Western media. That’s precisely so, and Mr. Bortnikov was not beating around the bush. He said precisely what you have said. They are working on expanding further the information leads they have now on the connections with ISIS in Istanbul on the timing of the American warning to Russia that a terrorist attack could take place. Let’s remember: that was on the 7th of March. That’s to say two days after Victoria Nuland was fired, and one day before the planned execution of the terrorist attack in Moscow.

So the bits and pieces, the dots, are taking are falling into place. I repeat that Mr. Bortnikov would never dare to say what he said yesterday without the blessing of Mr. Putin. And Mr. Putin has always been a very cautious player.

And if they were caught in Briansk, that means their getaway plan was clear to go towards Ukraine. They did not take a detour later on.

There is also Latvia, which also could have been an option for them to get away. Half of it, nearly 50 kilometers, doesn’t even have a barricade over there. And over 150 kilometers is yet to be developed properly. If they went to Latvia, it’s not clear what would happen. They could very well be held in custody. And that’s the last thing that the plotters wanted, that is, the foreign plotters wanted, was for these people to be alive and well and able to talk to the Russians. So there is a drawback here.

But I’d like to call attention to something that’s otherwise not noted in our coverage. That is the nature of the escape plan. It would have been logical, more logical in a way, for these assailants to have disappeared into the Russian Metro. They would be anonymous. They would be very hard to track. But that’s not what happened. Instead, they got into the same white Renault car that brought them from about six kilometers away from where they were lodging to the Crocus venue. They got back in that car. The emphasis in the whole escape was on speed, to do with blinding speed so that the Russians wouldn’t catch up with what was happening until these assailants crossed the frontier into Ukraine.

It is remarkable they were in the same car, because the car had been, obviously had been taken on video recorders, that of security devices that all of these major venues have around them. That was ignored. The assumption was that the Russians would be too slow and too uncoordinated to put all this together in an actionable way. But that was a mistake. They were so coordinated.

Dr. Doctorow, of course, the most pertinent question at the moment, among the many other pertinent questions, how do you feel this is going to impact the ongoing war in Ukraine?

Doctorow:
Disastrously for Ukraine, and I hope not disastrously for us. The discussions now on the premier Russian talk shows– and I have in mind the Vladimir Solovyov show of last night– have taken a radical turn towards violence. One of the Duma members, a member of a key committee on relations with the former Soviet Union, said last night openly, it’s time to raze Kharkiv to the ground.

We should give– Kharkiv is where the terrorist attacks, the Russians call them terrorist attacks; they are missile and artillery attacks, and also border incursions on the Belgorod frontier region of Russia. They’re coming from Kharkiv. They are intolerable. Dozens of Russian civilians are being killed each week. And that makes very bad news on Russian television. And there are patriots who say,

“Time to finish this. The Ukrainians are no longer our friends. They never again will be our friends. And it’s time to give a notice to Kharkiv that everyone should get in their car, pack their cars and head west, because we’re going to level Kharkiv to the ground.”

That language did not exist until after this terrorist event. There’s also talk yesterday on the Solovyov show,

“It’s time to flatten the presidential palace in Kiev, time to flatten all of the decision-making military and civilian institutions in Kiev.”

That violent language did not take place until now.

To the uninitiated, I explain first that the FSB is the successor organization to the Soviet Union’s well-known and much feared KGB.  However, the FSB today might be better compared with the FBI in the United States. It deals with domestic criminality of all kinds and with threats to Russian civilians such as terrorism. The agency and its head are rarely in the news.

In this respect, the FSB is less visible both at home and abroad than the Foreign Intelligence Service  headed by Sergei Naryshkin, a state figure who spent five years of this millennium as chairman of the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of the legislature, and also three years as head of the Presidential Administration. In both positions Naryshkin was very often seen on television performing his duties.

By contrast, Bortnikov spent the past 15 years in his FSB offices out of sight.  However, the spectacular attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue has propelled him to center stage and yesterday he met with the Russian state television journalist Pavel Zarubin for an interview and then allowed himself to be questioned further by a gaggle of other journalists on his way out along a corridor. This spontaneous Q&A was later broadcast on the television news. What Bortnikov had to say was extraordinary and bears directly on whether you and I should now be looking for bomb shelters. Regrettably you will not find any of it in the lead stories of today’s mainstream media.  The Financial Times, for example, features an account of Xi’s meeting with CEOs of American businesses to mend ties: interesting, but not very relevant if we are at the cusp of WWIII.

Bortnikov is by definition a member of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle of advisors. He, Putin and Naryshkin are all roughly the same age. At 72, Bortnikov is just several years older.

I was struck in particular by his poise and prudent, carefully weighed choice of words while setting out where the investigation is heading with transparency and a ‘let the chips fall where they may’ unaffected demeanor.

The journalists were all probing the question of who stood behind the terror attack. Bortnikov told them…and us: standing behind the terror act committed by Islamist extremists are the United States, Great Britain and Ukraine.

Bortnikov said that the preliminary findings indicate that the four perpetrators of the slaughter were headed by car to the border with Ukraine where they were awaited on the other side. He very calmly explained that the involvement of foreign powers is being clarified and that he will say nothing out of pure emotion now but will wait for the facts to be solidly collected before being presented.

Nonetheless, it was entirely newsworthy that he named the United States, Great Britain and Ukraine as the likely puppet masters of the terror act. Let us remember that following the bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines, the most significant attack on critical civilian infrastructure globally in the last 50 years, Russian officials did not point the finger directly at any country. There was innuendo but no direct accusations such as we heard from Bortnikov yesterday.

Meanwhile, quite apart from Mr. Bortnikov’s chat with journalists, a lot of new elements to the terror attack at Crocus City Hall were posted yesterday on the Russian state television news and analysis program Sixty Minutes. In particular, we learned that in the last days of February and first couple of days of March two of the four attackers were in Istanbul. The departure and arrival of one at a Moscow airport was recorded on video. We were told which hotels they stayed in, and the selfies and other photos taken by one in Istanbul were put up on the screen. It is still not clear with whom they met in Turkey. However, the timing itself is very important, because the point was made that they returned to Moscow to carry out a terror attack on 8 March, International Women’s Day, a sacred date on the Russian calendar. Had they done so on that day, the effect would have been catastrophic for the presidential elections in Russia one week later.

However, per Sixty Minutes, it was determined that Russian state security on 8 March was too tight for the terrorist mission to succeed and the United States decided to pull the plug on that operation. Note that this is approximately the time when Victoria Nuland tendered her resignation at the State Department (5 March).  The possible causal link here surely deserves attention by my peers in the U.S. ‘dissident’ community.

In any case, the scenario which was explored later in the day on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov talk show is that the Ukrainians decided to proceed with the terror attack a week after the Russian presidential elections, when it lost most of its rationale.  They did so over the objections of Washington.

From time to time, readers ask why I pay attention to talk shows like Vladimir Solovyov’s.  These skeptics tend to ignore that Solovyov invites not just the usual irresponsible academics and journalists who can amuse the public but also some very serious statesmen who are close to the center of power in Russia and exert influence on the conduct of foreign and domestic policy, including in particular committee chairmen and other key personalities from the State Duma.

So it was last night when we heard from a member of the Committee on Relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States (Former Soviet Union). With reference to the never ending terror attacks on civilians in the Russian border region of Belgorod coming from nearby Kharkiv (Ukraine), he said it is time to raze Kharkov to the ground: issue a warning to the population to get in their cars and head West, then blow it all to bits.  Kharkiv is, by the way, Ukraine’s second most populous city after Kiev.

In general, the mood of panelists and of the host Solovyov himself is now changing in a cardinal manner: Ukraine is seen as an enemy state and the sooner it is finished off the better. There was talk last night on the need for missile strikes to flatten the presidential palace in Kiev along with all military and other decision making government centers in the capital.

As we have observed repeatedly over the past two years. President Putin has been a voice for moderation and restraint, resisting actions that might precipitate WWIII.  That is clearly coming to an end when his own FSB director names the United States and the UK as planners of the biggest terror attack in Russia in 20 years.

Für Uneingeweihte erkläre ich zunächst, dass der FSB die Nachfolgeorganisation des bekannten und gefürchteten KGB der Sowjetunion ist. Allerdings könnte man den FSB heute eher mit dem FBI in den Vereinigten Staaten vergleichen. Er befasst sich mit inländischer Kriminalität aller Art und mit Bedrohungen für die russische Zivilbevölkerung wie dem Terrorismus. Die Behörde und ihr Leiter sind nur selten in den Nachrichten zu sehen.

In dieser Hinsicht ist der FSB im In- und Ausland weniger sichtbar als der Auslandsnachrichtendienst unter der Leitung von Sergej Naryschkin, der in diesem Jahrtausend fünf Jahre lang Vorsitzender der Staatsduma, des russischen Unterhauses der Legislative, und drei Jahre lang Leiter der Präsidialverwaltung war. In beiden Positionen war Naryschkin sehr oft im Fernsehen bei der Ausübung seiner Pflichten zu sehen.

Bortnikow hingegen verbrachte die letzten 15 Jahre in seinen FSB-Büros im Verborgenen. Der spektakuläre Anschlag auf das Konzerthaus am Krokus hat ihn jedoch ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit gerückt. Gestern traf er sich mit dem Journalisten des russischen Staatsfernsehens, Pawel Zarubin, zu einem Interview und ließ sich dann auf dem Weg nach draußen auf einem Korridor von einer Schar anderer Journalisten weiter befragen. Diese spontane Fragerunde wurde später in den Fernsehnachrichten ausgestrahlt. Was Bortnikov zu sagen hatte, war außergewöhnlich und hat direkten Einfluss auf die Frage, ob Sie und ich jetzt nach Luftschutzbunkern suchen sollten. Bedauerlicherweise werden Sie nichts davon in den Leitartikeln der heutigen Mainstream-Medien finden. Die Financial Times zum Beispiel berichtet über Xis Treffen mit den CEOs amerikanischer Unternehmen, um die Beziehungen zu verbessern: interessant, aber nicht sehr relevant, wenn wir uns an der Schwelle zum Dritten Weltkrieg befinden.

Die Journalisten gingen alle der Frage nach, wer hinter dem Terroranschlag steht. Bortnikov sagte ihnen… und uns: Hinter dem von islamistischen Extremisten begangenen Terrorakt stehen die Vereinigten Staaten, Großbritannien und die Ukraine.

Bortnikov sagte, dass die ersten Erkenntnisse darauf hindeuten, dass die vier Täter mit dem Auto zur ukrainischen Grenze fuhren, wo sie auf der anderen Seite erwartet wurden. Er erklärte sehr ruhig, dass die Beteiligung ausländischer Mächte geklärt werde und dass er jetzt nichts aus reiner Emotion sagen werde, sondern abwarten werde, bis die Fakten solide gesammelt seien, bevor er sie präsentiere.

Nichtsdestotrotz war es durchaus berichtenswert, dass er die Vereinigten Staaten, Großbritannien und die Ukraine als wahrscheinliche Drahtzieher des Terroraktes benannte. Wir sollten uns daran erinnern, dass russische Beamte nach dem Bombenanschlag auf die Nord-Stream-Pipelines, dem weltweit bedeutendsten Angriff auf kritische zivile Infrastrukturen in den letzten 50 Jahren, nicht direkt mit dem Finger auf ein Land gezeigt haben. Es gab Andeutungen, aber keine direkten Anschuldigungen, wie wir es auch gestern von Bortnikow gehört haben.

Abgesehen von Herrn Bortnikovs Gespräch mit Journalisten wurden gestern in der Nachrichten- und Analysesendung “Sechzig Minuten” des russischen Staatsfernsehens viele neue Informationen über den Terroranschlag auf das Krokus-Zentrum veröffentlicht. Insbesondere erfuhren wir, dass sich zwei der vier Angreifer in den letzten Februartagen und in den ersten Märztagen in Istanbul aufhielten. Der Abflug und die Ankunft des einen auf einem Moskauer Flughafen wurden auf Video aufgezeichnet. Wir erfuhren, in welchen Hotels sie sich aufhielten, und die Selfies und anderen Fotos, die einer von ihnen in Istanbul machte, wurden auf dem Bildschirm gezeigt. Es ist immer noch nicht klar, mit wem sie sich in der Türkei getroffen haben. Der Zeitpunkt selbst ist jedoch sehr wichtig, denn es wurde darauf hingewiesen, dass sie nach Moskau zurückkehrten, um am 8. März, dem Internationalen Frauentag, einem heiligen Datum im russischen Kalender, einen Terroranschlag zu verüben. Hätten sie dies an diesem Tag getan, hätte dies katastrophale Auswirkungen auf die eine Woche später stattfindenden Präsidentschaftswahlen in Russland gehabt.

Sie taten dies gegen die Einwände Washingtons.

Von Zeit zu Zeit fragen mich Leser, warum ich Talkshows wie der von Wladimir Solowjow Aufmerksamkeit schenke. Diese Skeptiker neigen dazu, zu ignorieren, dass Solowjow nicht nur die üblichen nicht verantwortlichen Akademiker und Journalisten einlädt, die das Publikum unterhalten können, sondern auch einige sehr ernsthafte Staatsmänner, die dem Machtzentrum in Russland nahe stehen und Einfluss auf die Gestaltung der Außen- und Innenpolitik ausüben, darunter insbesondere Ausschussvorsitzende und andere wichtige Persönlichkeiten der Staatsduma.

So war es auch gestern Abend, als wir von einem Mitglied des Ausschusses für die Beziehungen zur Gemeinschaft Unabhängiger Staaten (ehemalige Sowjetunion) hörten. Mit Bezug auf die nicht enden wollenden Terroranschläge auf die Zivilbevölkerung in der russischen Grenzregion Belgorod, die aus dem nahegelegenen Charkiw (Ukraine) kommen, sagte er, es sei an der Zeit, Charkiw dem Erdboden gleichzumachen: eine Warnung an die Bevölkerung auszusprechen, in ihre Autos zu steigen und nach Westen zu fahren, und dann alles in die Luft zu jagen. Charkiw ist übrigens nach Kiew die zweitgrößte Stadt der Ukraine.

Generell hat sich die Stimmung der Diskussionsteilnehmer und des Gastgebers Solowjow selbst grundlegend geändert: Die Ukraine wird als feindlicher Staat betrachtet, und je schneller sie vernichtet wird, desto besser. Gestern Abend wurde über die Notwendigkeit von Raketenangriffen gesprochen, um den Präsidentenpalast in Kiew sowie alle militärischen und anderen entscheidungsrelevanten Regierungszentren in der Hauptstadt zu zerstören.

Wie wir in den letzten zwei Jahren immer wieder beobachten konnten: Präsident Putin war eine Stimme der Mäßigung und Zurückhaltung und hat sich gegen Aktionen gewehrt, die den Dritten Weltkrieg auslösen könnten. Damit ist nun eindeutig Schluss, wenn sein eigener FSB-Direktor die Vereinigten Staaten und das Vereinigte Königreich als Planer des größten Terroranschlags in Russland seit 20 Jahren nennt.

Today’s edition of The New York Times tells us triumphantly that “President Vladimir Putin of Russia acknowledged for the first time that ‘radical Islamists’ had carried out the attack on a concert hall near Moscow…,” meaning that the Russians have accepted the American version of who was responsible. And yet, they noted, Putin was still ‘insisting that Ukraine could still have played a role,’ as if it was pure obstinacy on the part of the Russian president to justify a politically more convenient explanation leading to escalation of the war.

Meanwhile, doing its part to convey the narrative provided by Washington, The Financial Times front page tells us “How Ukraine war distracted Moscow from Isis-K threat: Russia’s security services have shifted focus away from Islamist terror.” This same line happens to be among the points made by Ukrainian president Zelensky in his first comments on the attack just hours after it occurred. Once again, I say, ‘hats off’ to the propaganda department in Washington for close coordination of what the general public reads and hears everywhere on planet Earth.

Meanwhile, among Russia’s chattering classes there is a lot of speculation on who was really behind the concert hall attack and whether the terrorists were genuinely members of the Afghanistan-based Isis-K.

The premier talk show Evening with Vladimir Solovyov last night gave voice to these thoughts. Specialists on the Middle East and Islamic issues told us that the attack did not follow the usual pattern of Isis and other Muslim extremist groups. It was staged in the middle of Ramadan, which normally is not violated by the Jihadists, and also on a Friday, for a double measure of exceptionality. The attackers made no attempt to take hostages or to make political demands, which usually has been the case. They were only interested in killing as many innocent people as possible, for which they were being paid onto their bank cards. What could they do with such payments? They could send the money to their relatives in Tajikistan, where even the $5,000 ruble equivalent paid out would be useful. And they appeared not to be seeking martyrdom. The perpetrators sere keen on escaping, and the vector of their escape route was straight to Ukraine from which they were about 100 km distant when apprehended.

The assumption of the panelists speaking on the Solovyov show was that the escape path to Ukraine indicates Ukrainian involvement. What no one has said on television or elsewhere is what fate would have awaited the terrorists had they made it to Ukraine. Would it have enabled them to evade the clutches of the Russians or would they have been murdered upon arrival to silence them and show good faith to the international community on the part of Kiev?

I did not hear among the Solovyov panelists mention of Washington as the overall director of the attack.

Otherwise, discussion of the atrocity moved on to the questions of whether the death penalty should now be reintroduced in Russia and what to do to fix the obviously failed controls on immigration from Central Asia, a failure that is in large part blamed on corruption among the Russian law enforcers.

But let us not dwell on what Mr. Solovyov’s talk show promoted. Yesterday I read an essay by Dmitry Trenin on what the ongoing investigation into the perpetrators and paymasters of the Crocus City Hall atrocity may lead to. Considering who Trenin is and what he says, this article, which was published on RT, is worth our time.

For those who are not familiar with Trenin, allow me to explain that he is a leading Russian analyst and commentator, a member of all the most authoritative security and foreign affairs institutions in Moscow, with a background of high service in the Russian military going back to the 1990s and with more than a decade at the helm of the Carnegie Center Moscow, a U.S. sponsored think tank. Trenin left the Carnegie shortly after the start of the Special Military Operation and, in short order, the Carnegie Center was closed down. He has since then been making amends for his past coddling of anti-Putin Liberals, but always within the bounds of solid academic reasoning. In this respect, Trenin’s evolution since 24 February 2022 is very similar to that of the former director of The National Interest foundation (formerly The Nixon Center) in Washington, Dmitry Simes, who moved back to Moscow from the United States after the start of the SMO to defend Russian national interests as opposed to U.S. interests.

From the very title, it is clear that Trenin is directing attention to possible United States involvement in the atrocity. The fact that Washington was publicly identifying the terrorist group within minutes of the attack in damning. However, he holds open the possibility that Kiev ‘conceived, planned and organized’ the attack.

Trenin acknowledges that at this point ‘nothing is firmly established,’ but he insists that the conclusions ultimately reached can greatly impact on Russia’s conduct of the war with Ukraine.  If it becomes clear, for example, that Kiev did it all, then it is assumed that President Zelensky gave it his approval. In this case, all prior guaranties by President Putin not to touch the Kiev leadership are withdrawn.

Kiev will be identified than as a terrorist state, which constitutes an inadmissible neighbor.

Moreover, establishing Kiev’s responsibility would necessarily implicate the United States as having had at a minimum advance knowledge and hence been complicity. Under these circumstances, says Trenin, we may now expect Russia to carry out strikes against airfields in NATO countries if they are used by the Ukrainian air force. We may expect Russia to annihilate any French expeditionary force. Andwe may expect a ‘head-on collision’ between Russia and NATO.

This is food for thought from a restrained and knowledgeable source. Is anyone in Washington, London or Brussels paying attention?

In der heutigen Ausgabe der New York Times heißt es triumphierend, dass “der russische Präsident Wladimir Putin zum ersten Mal eingeräumt hat, dass ‘radikale Islamisten’ den Anschlag auf eine Konzerthalle in der Nähe von Moskau verübt haben…”, was bedeutet, dass die Russen die amerikanische Version der Verantwortlichen akzeptiert hätten. Und dennoch, so stellten sie fest, bestehe Putin immer noch “darauf, dass die Ukraine eine Rolle gespielt haben könnte”, als sei es reine Sturheit des russischen Präsidenten, eine politisch bequemere Erklärung zu rechtfertigen, die zu einer Eskalation des Krieges führt.

Unterdessen wird in Russland viel darüber spekuliert, wer wirklich hinter dem Anschlag auf die Konzerthalle steckt und ob es sich bei den Terroristen tatsächlich um Mitglieder der in Afghanistan ansässigen Isis-K handelt.

In der wichtigen Talkshow Abend mit Wladimir Solowjow wurden diese Überlegungen gestern Abend zum Ausdruck gebracht. Fachleute für den Nahen Osten und islamische Fragen erklärten uns, dass der Anschlag nicht dem üblichen Muster von Isis und anderen muslimischen Extremistengruppen entsprach. Er wurde mitten im Ramadan verübt, der normalerweise von den Dschihadisten nicht verletzt wird, und außerdem an einem Freitag, was eine doppelte Ausnahme ist. Die Angreifer versuchten nicht, Geiseln zu nehmen oder politische Forderungen zu stellen, was normalerweise der Fall ist. Sie waren nur daran interessiert, so viele unschuldige Menschen wie möglich zu töten, wofür sie mit ihren Bankkarten bezahlt wurden. Was könnten sie mit solchen Zahlungen tun? Sie könnten das Geld an ihre Verwandten in Tadschikistan schicken, wo selbst der Gegenwert von 5.000 Dollar, der ausgezahlt wird, von Nutzen wäre. Niemand im Fernsehen oder anderswo hat gesagt, welches Schicksal die Terroristen erwartet hätte, wenn sie es in die Ukraine geschafft hätten. Hätten sie sich so den Fängen der Russen entziehen können oder wären sie bei ihrer Ankunft ermordet worden, um sie zum Schweigen zu bringen und der internationalen Gemeinschaft den guten Willen Kiews zu beweisen?

Ich habe nicht gehört, dass die Teilnehmer des Solovyov-Panels Washington als Gesamtleiter des Angriffs erwähnt hätten.

Ansonsten ging die Diskussion über die Gräueltat zu den Fragen über, ob die Todesstrafe in Russland wieder eingeführt werden sollte und was zu tun ist, um die offensichtlich fehlgeschlagenen Kontrollen der Einwanderung aus Zentralasien zu beheben, ein Versagen, das zu einem großen Teil auf die Korruption unter den russischen Strafverfolgern zurückgeführt wird.

Aber halten wir uns nicht mit dem auf, was Herrn Solovyovs Talkshow propagiert hat. Gestern habe ich einen Aufsatz von Dmitry Trenin gelesen, in dem es darum geht, was die laufenden Ermittlungen gegen die Täter und Auftraggeber der Gräueltat im Krokus-Zentrum ergeben könnten. Wenn man bedenkt, wer Trenin ist und was er sagt, ist dieser Artikel, der auf RT veröffentlicht wurde, unsere Zeit wert.

Für diejenigen, die mit Trenin nicht vertraut sind, möchte ich erklären, dass er ein führender russischer Analyst und Kommentator ist, Mitglied aller maßgeblichen sicherheits- und außenpolitischen Institutionen in Moskau, mit einem Hintergrund von hohen Diensten im russischen Militär, die bis in die 1990er Jahre zurückreichen, und mit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt an der Spitze des Carnegie-Zentrums Moskau, einer von den USA geförderten Denkfabrik. Trenin verließ das Carnegie Center kurz nach dem Beginn der militärischen Sonderoperation, und das Carnegie Center wurde kurz darauf geschlossen. Seitdem hat er sich von seiner früheren Verhätschelung der Anti-Putin-Liberalen abgewandt, aber immer im Rahmen einer soliden wissenschaftlichen Argumentation. In dieser Hinsicht ähnelt Trenins Entwicklung seit dem 24. Februar 2022 sehr der des ehemaligen Direktors der Stiftung The National Interest (ehemals The Nixon Center) in Washington, Dmitry Simes, der nach dem Beginn der SMO aus den Vereinigten Staaten nach Moskau zurückgekehrt ist, um die nationalen Interessen Russlands im Gegensatz zu den Interessen der USA zu verteidigen.

Schon der Titel macht deutlich, dass Trenin die Aufmerksamkeit auf eine mögliche Beteiligung der Vereinigten Staaten an der Gräueltat lenkt. Die Tatsache, dass Washington die Terrorgruppe innerhalb weniger Minuten nach dem Anschlag öffentlich identifiziert hat, ist belastend. Er hält sich jedoch die Möglichkeit offen, dass Kiew den Anschlag “konzipiert, geplant und organisiert” hat.

Trenin räumt ein, dass zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt “nichts feststeht”, aber er besteht darauf, dass die Schlussfolgerungen, zu denen man letztlich gelangt, erhebliche Auswirkungen auf Russlands Verhalten im Krieg mit der Ukraine haben könnten. Wenn sich beispielsweise herausstellt, dass Kiew alles getan hat, dann wird davon ausgegangen, dass Präsident Zelenski seine Zustimmung gegeben hat. In diesem Fall werden alle vorherigen Zusicherungen von Präsident Putin, die Kiewer Führung nicht anzutasten, zurückgenommen.

Kiew wird dann als terroristischer Staat identifiziert, der ein untragbarer Nachbar ist.

Außerdem würde die Feststellung der Verantwortung Kiews zwangsläufig bedeuten, dass die Vereinigten Staaten zumindest im Voraus davon wussten und somit mitschuldig waren. Unter diesen Umständen, so Trenin, können wir nun erwarten, dass Russland Flugplätze in NATO-Ländern angreift, wenn sie von der ukrainischen Luftwaffe genutzt werden. Wir können damit rechnen, dass Russland jedes französische Expeditionskorps vernichtet. Und wir können mit einem “Frontalzusammenstoß” zwischen Russland und der NATO rechnen.

Dies ist ein Denkanstoß von einer zurückhaltenden und sachkundigen Quelle. Hört irgendjemand in Washington, London oder Brüssel zu?

This morning I was interviewed by India’s premier global English-language broadcaster WION for a chat about who were the puppet masters behind the savage terrorist attack at a concert hall located in the suburbs of Moscow two days ago.

I set out below the essence for your consideration.

The context for my remarks was a lengthy article published online this morning by The Financial Times under the title “Moscow seeks to blame Kyiv for Isis concert hall attack.” The wording “seeks to blame” tells you clearly that the editorial stance of the newspaper is to ridicule what were so far just hints at Ukrainian responsibility for the atrocity in Vladimir Putin’s address to the nation yesterday. The most important hint was with respect to the ‘window’ opened by the Ukrainian authorities for the fleeing gunmen to escape across the border. This is treated by the FT as Russian propaganda: “…Putin, Russian officials and the FSB security service repeatedly claimed the assailants were intercepted while en route to Ukraine.”

Instead, citing “US and other western countries,” the FT insists that the Ukrainians had nothing to do with the massacre.  After all, ISIS itself has publicly claimed responsibility. To be more precise, the culprits were “an Afghan-based affiliate called Isis-Khorasan, or Isis-K.” 

The FT reasons that Russia is viewed with the same hatred by ISIS as are Western states. The Afghan affiliate, which was little known till now, had every reason to carry out the spectacular attack to draw attention to itself and thereby to greatly enhance its recruitment prospects.

Per the FT, this same Isis-K has attempted terrorist attacks in Western Europe in the recent past but was thwarted each time. Russia proved to be an easier target, hence the successful operation at the Crocus City Hall auditorium.

All of this argumentation by The Financial Times, or rather by the fast talkers in Washington who fed the FT its lines to disseminate to its respectable audience, all of this argumentation has a fatal flaw, namely the assumption that there is an either/or here:  either the Ukrainians did it, or the Isis-K did it. 

However, upon inspection it is fairly obvious that both sets of actors, Isis-K and the Ukrainian military intelligence operatives, worked cooperatively.  Only in this way could a group of Tajik gunmen with poor knowledge of Russian, as we now know from the tapes of their initial interrogation posted on Russian television, and with still less knowledge of the target site have pulled off the attack and made their way out of Moscow by car, nearly reaching the Ukrainian border in the Russian province of Bryansk to the west.

Clearly it was Ukrainian intelligence operatives who were the enablers. They speak native Russian. The Russian-Ukrainian border is porous and these operatives have established themselves within Russia in considerable numbers. They would have had ample opportunity to prepare the cache of automatic rifles and incendiary devices, to inspect the venue for attack, to learn where the security staff had their office, to find escape routes and to do all of the other preparatory and support work necessary for success.

So much for the benefit to the Isis-K from working hand in hand with the Ukrainians. But what were the benefits to Kiev from this cooperation?  The answer is that this arrangement could deflect blame entirely away from Kiev and onto a credible international terrorist organization, as the US tells us, so that gullible readers of the FT and of other major Western media carrying the story will believe that Putin is lying.

I will not mince words: this cynical and duplicitous plot has on it the fingerprints of National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who made his name in infamy in the Nord Stream II bombings, per Sy Hersh, or by the CIA, acting in consort with Sullivan. We already know from recent New York Times exposes that the CIA has been deeply embedded in Ukraine’s terrorist activities.

Sullivan has taken the relay baton from Victoria Nuland and is now the leading promoter of WWIII in the Biden Administration. It was he who a week ago had to be squelched by Secretary of State Blinken when he sought to describe Vladimir Putin’s electoral victory as illegitimate. The final language of the U.S. position on the elections placed before Biden to read was that Putin is Russia’s president. But that came only after a big internal debate which Sullivan lost.  The Crocus City Hall massacre suggests that Sullivan has not yet gotten the message that the outbreak of WWIII will not help Biden’s electoral chances.

Da dieses Gericht am besten warm serviert wird, möchte ich Ihnen im Folgenden die Essenz darlegen.

Anlass für meine Bemerkungen war ein längerer Artikel, der heute Morgen von der Financial Times unter dem Titel “Moscow seeks to blame Kyiv for Isis concert hall attack” (“Moskau will Kiew für Isis-Anschlag auf Konzertsaal verantwortlich machen”) online veröffentlicht wurde. Die Formulierung “versucht, Kiew die Schuld zu geben” macht deutlich, dass die Zeitung die Andeutungen über die ukrainische Verantwortung für die Gräueltat in der gestrigen Rede von Wladimir Putin an die Nation ins Lächerliche ziehen will. Der wichtigste Hinweis bezog sich auf das “Fenster”, das die ukrainischen Behörden den fliehenden Bewaffneten geöffnet hatten, um über die Grenze zu entkommen. Dies wird von der FT als russische Propaganda behandelt: “…Putin, russische Beamte und der Sicherheitsdienst FSB behaupteten wiederholt, die Angreifer seien auf dem Weg in die Ukraine abgefangen worden.”

Stattdessen beharrt die FT unter Berufung auf “die USA und andere westliche Länder” darauf, dass die Ukrainer nichts mit dem Massaker zu tun hatten. Immerhin habe ISIS selbst öffentlich die Verantwortung übernommen. Genauer gesagt handele es sich bei den Tätern um “eine in Afghanistan ansässige Tochtergesellschaft namens Isis-Khorasan, oder Isis-K”.

Die FT begründet dies damit, dass Russland von ISIS mit dem gleichen Hass betrachtet werde wie westliche Staaten. Die afghanische Tochtergesellschaft, die bisher kaum bekannt sei, hätte allen Grund, den spektakulären Anschlag zu verüben, um auf sich aufmerksam zu machen und damit ihre Rekrutierungsaussichten erheblich zu verbessern.

Laut FT habe dieselbe Isis-K in der jüngeren Vergangenheit versucht, Terroranschläge in Westeuropa zu verüben, was aber jedes Mal vereitelt worden sei. Russland habe sich als leichteres Ziel erwiesen, daher die erfolgreiche Operation im Konzertsaal des Krokus-Konferenzzentrums.

All diese Argumentation der Financial Times, oder besser gesagt, der Schnellredner in Washington, die die FT mit ihren Zeilen gefüttert haben, um sie an ihr respektables Publikum zu verbreiten, all diese Argumentation hat einen fatalen Fehler, nämlich die Annahme, dass es hier ein Entweder-Oder gibt: Entweder waren es die Ukrainer, oder Isis-K war es.

Bei näherer Betrachtung ist es jedoch ziemlich offensichtlich, dass beide Gruppen von Akteuren, Isis-K und der ukrainische Militärgeheimdienst, zusammengearbeitet haben. Nur so konnte eine Gruppe tadschikischer Bewaffneter mit geringen Russischkenntnissen, wie wir jetzt aus den im russischen Fernsehen veröffentlichten Aufzeichnungen ihres ersten Verhörs wissen, und mit noch weniger Kenntnissen über den Anschlagsort den Anschlag verüben und sich mit dem Auto aus Moskau hinausbewegen, um fast die ukrainische Grenze in der russischen Provinz Brjansk im Westen zu erreichen.

Es waren eindeutig ukrainische Geheimdienstmitarbeiter, die dies ermöglicht haben. Sie sprechen Russisch als Muttersprache. Die russisch-ukrainische Grenze ist durchlässig, und diese Agenten haben sich in großer Zahl in Russland niedergelassen. Sie hätten reichlich Gelegenheit gehabt, den Vorrat an automatischen Gewehren und Brandsätzen vorzubereiten, den Anschlagsort zu inspizieren, herauszufinden, wo das Sicherheitspersonal sein Büro hat, Fluchtwege zu finden und all die anderen Vorbereitungs- und Unterstützungsarbeiten zu erledigen, die für einen Erfolg notwendig sind.

So viel zu den Vorteilen, die Isis-K aus der Zusammenarbeit mit den Ukrainern gezogen hat. Aber welchen Nutzen hatte Kiew von dieser Zusammenarbeit? Die Antwort ist, dass diese Vereinbarung die Schuld von Kiew ablenken und einer glaubwürdigen internationalen Terrororganisation zuschieben könnte, wie uns die USA erzählen, so dass leichtgläubige Leser der FT und anderer großer westlicher Medien, die die Geschichte verbreiten, glauben werden, dass Putin lügt.

Ich nehme kein Blatt vor den Mund: Dieses zynische und verlogene Komplott trägt die Fingerabdrücke des Nationalen Sicherheitsberaters Jake Sullivan, der sich selbst (nach Sy Hersh) oder die CIA gemeinsam mit Sullivan, durch die Bombenanschläge auf Nord Stream II einen Namen gemacht hat. Aus den jüngsten Enthüllungen der New York Times wissen wir bereits, dass die CIA tief in die terroristischen Aktivitäten der Ukraine verstrickt ist.

Sullivan hat den Staffelstab von Victoria Nuland übernommen und ist nun der führende Förderer des Dritten Weltkriegs in der Biden-Regierung. Er war es, der vor einer Woche von Außenminister Blinken zurechtgewiesen werden musste, als er versuchte, den Wahlsieg von Wladimir Putin als illegitim zu bezeichnen. Die endgültige Formulierung der US-Position zu den Wahlen, die Biden zur Verlesung vorgelegt wurde, lautete, dass Putin der Präsident Russlands ist. Dies geschah jedoch erst nach einer großen internen Debatte, die Sullivan verloren hat. Das Massaker in der Crocus City Hall deutet darauf hin, dass Sullivan noch nicht begriffen hat, dass der Ausbruch des Dritten Weltkriegs Bidens Wahlchancen nicht verbessern wird.

Finally a substantial feed of information on the massacre is being released to the public by Russian official news channels including RT. Moreover at 15.00 Moscow time, President Putin delivered a televised address to the nation on this tragedy. In what follows I will provide relevant facts and my own commentary.

First, as was expected, the death toll has risen sharply from first news last night. It now stands at 140 and may go still higher.  Most of the victims apparently died from gunshot wounds. Some died from asphyxiation linked to smoke from the fire on the premises which the attackers lit with incendiary devices. The event under attack was a rock concert that was about to begin and many of those killed were children and adolescents, a fact which, rightly or wrongly, Russians consider particularly heinous.

We know that 11 of those responsible were apprehended, including the four who committed the murders in the auditorium. They were caught in a forest of the Bryansk province, following a car chase and exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers when they tried to evade a roadside control. They were driving their Renault car in the direction of the Ukrainian border.

 We are told that several at least are citizens of the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, although Tajik authorities deny that their people were involved. Representatives of the Islamic State terrorist organization have claimed responsibility, although that by itself says nothing about ultimate directions from Ukraine.

One of the terrorists revealed under police interrogation that they were paid 500,000 rubles for the attack, amounting to a paltry $5,000. Another 500,000 was to be paid later, following the attack, but it is safe to assume that the paymasters never expected that half to be paid out. 

Vladimir Putin’s address to the nation was calm and non-accusatory with respect to the puppet masters behind the atrocity, though he did drop a couple of hints as to who they are, which I will mention in a minute.

The title of this news item gives you the first hint –  “Putin: there is information about the preparation of an escape window for the murderers on the Ukrainian side”

Otherwise, Putin’s opening words were of comfort to the bereaved and relatives of those wounded. We know from other sources that the Moscow and Moscow regional authorities have announced compensation to be paid to all victims and their relatives.

Putin put the attack in the context of global terrorism and did not specifically name anyone. He said that what was planned was a mass murder, a kind of ‘demonstrative execution’ such as were committed by the Nazis under Hitler.  We may call this hint number two in the direction of Ukraine.

Tomorrow has been declared a national day of mourning in Russia. The Culture Ministry has cancelled all events involving large gatherings of people and cities across Russia have declared heightened security measures.  Indeed the situation at the Crocus City Hall was exceedingly lax: there were no armed guards. The security people had only wooden clubs, not firearms, and they apparently were in their quarters when they were tracked down by the assailants and murdered first before they proceeded to the auditorium.

Let there be no confusion here:  the tragedy yesterday is a turning point in the war. I remain persuaded that it was an American sanctioned or directed provocation intended to elicit the violent response that I mentioned in my last essay – a Russian strike on Kiev with intent to decapitate the Zelensky regime.

Wladimir Putins Ansprache an die Nation war ruhig und nicht anklagend in Bezug auf die Marionettenspieler, die hinter der Gräueltat stecken, obwohl er ein paar Hinweise darauf gab, wer sie sind, die ich gleich erwähnen werde.

Ich bin nach wie vor davon überzeugt, dass es sich um eine von den Amerikanern sanktionierte oder gesteuerte Provokation handelte, die die von mir in meinem letzten Aufsatz erwähnte gewaltsame Reaktion hervorrufen sollte – einen russischen Angriff auf Kiew mit der Absicht, das Zelenski-Regime zu enthaupten.
